Analog delay

So I'm looking to complete my pedalboard with an analog delay for my distortion to use for leads to get some thickness. I thought the mod feature on the MXR Carbon Copy and some other ones might help it to brighten up and cut through a little more, but I'm not really sure (Let me know if I'm just way off with that). I've tried searching to see what is regarded as the best analog delay pedal. It's so subjective though. I've kind of narrowed it down to the MXR Carbon Copy, Malekko 616, and maybe the Ibanez AD-9. I didn't really like the Memory Toy when I tried it. Another thing is it has to be about the same size as all these, since that's all the room I have on my pedalboard! Any suggestions from you guys? Thanks!

Hey man, check it out.... I've owned a Boss DD-3, a Boss DD-7, the new Hardwire series by Digitech's Delay... and a few others, granted these are all digital, but when I got the Carbon Copy it's the first time I ever actually went WOOOWWW, and could notice a CONSIDERABLE difference in clarity warmth and tone...
I'm not going to gush about how much I love the pedal, I will just say it's my favorite pedal BAR NONE, the mod feature on the pedal adds a slight chorusing sound to the repeats and makes it very lush sounding...

In short, for the price, unless your going to bump up to the next price point the Carbon Copy is absolutely AMAZING, buy it and thank me later, don't even think about anything else... it's small footprint is amazing as well, so much beautiful tone in such a small package, it's true bypass, and the LED's are extremely bright and cool looking (I'm an LED nerd).

So yea, just buy it, this is all my opinion obviously, but I know super delay freaks who have several Eventide Delays ($400+) on their board and they still rave about how good the Carbon Copy is for the price...

The one drawback of the pedal is the knobs are large, and are bumped easily, I wish MXR made some type of bumper like the Hardwire series does that goes over the knobs so they cant be moved, or maybe a switch to disable the knobs and keeps them where they are when you engage the switch, but this is only a problem if you are gigging, when I pack up my board they tend to get moved, but luckily I like the way the pedal sounds with everything at noon so I dont have to mess with finding my sound again when it happens...

I always do this, say I'm gonna keep it short and then I start to ramble....

Buy the pedal, you wont be dissapointed....

Thanks man. That's kind of the one I'm leaning towards at the moment, because I have played it before at music stores and it did sound good. I just wanted to get a second opinion from some people who know their tone.

For the price, I would highly suggest the MXR Carbon Copy. No tone degradation what so ever. I had used a DD3 for years, but that tone sucking little bastard has been displaced. The cool thing that MXR CC has going for it is the mix control. I usually put a slow delay with the regen knob to the left with just a few hits and keep it about 30% on the mix and leave it on for rhythm or lead work. It really widens up everything. It also produces some nice shimmer on the repeats.

If you really want to spend some serious cash, grab a T-rex Replica. At $400 this is one sweet analog delay. But, I have a tough time throwing $400 down on any pedal.

I am an Ibanez/Maxon fan, so I would go with an Ibanez or Maxon AD-9.

I have a Maxon AD-80 that I love. Only drawback is the 300ms limit, but that is fine for me.

Have you compared them side by side? Why do you like the Ibanez/Maxon stuff better?

That's why I didn't look at one. I couldn't set the delay times for the U2 songs that my band plays once in a while at 322ms

The MXR is nice, it's dark sounding, but I like that and leave it on all the time...fattens the tone. I like the modulation button for the delay 'on' all time.

I haven't tried many analog delays, I got what I wanted with the Maxon AD-80. I did try a EH DMM, it was a cool sound, but not really what I was looking for.

I do have an Akai Headrush E1 if I want longer delay times. I mostly use my AD-80 for short slapback delays.

So you are using the MXR carbon copy now? How do you know to set the delay to exactly 322ms on the U2 song? I just generally find any delay hard to set more than slap back.

The Replica is digital, but it does sound more analog compared to other digital delays. I like that delay, but it does sucks some tone. With the latest update, the Eventide Time Factor can be made to sound similar, but without the tone suck.

The Reptile is the analog delay from T Rex.

Actually I've gotten really quick using it on the fly.
I usually have it set for about a 450ms delay mixed low....I leave that on all the time to get rid of the dry feel.
When a U2 song comes up I crank up the delay level and set the time knob to just below 12 O'clock...takes about 2 seconds to adjust.
It was a bit awkward finding it exactly at first, now its a sinch.

Just thought of a good way to use a pedal like this for mutiple exact settings.
Remove the knob, put some white tape around the pot, replace knob, mark with ticks the essential settings you need on the fly.

of the 3 you mentioned i think the maleeko is by far the best...i am an analog delay freak!,..until recently i built my entire rig around a 1980 multivox (rack unit) mxd5,...then it crapped out,..(or so i thought)...i was in a panick and went on a analod delaY SAFARI!!....came home with a moogerfooger strapped to the roof of my truck and a big smile on my face.

the end.

Why do you think its better than the CC? They seem to be very similar.

Tape markings are a good idea. Delay is one of those effects that I don't really feel I have mastered as far as setting it, hence why I typically use a slap back setting.

For my 2nd pedalboard, I am considering adding a Digital Delay or getting an MXR Carbon Copy and replacing the Maxon AD-80. Anything about the MXR you don't like?

Carbon Copy is great.

The Boss RE-20 is worth a look. Lots of features, you can have reverb and delay with some settings. Use an expression pedal with it for some cool effects.

And if you are independently wealthy I would get the Fulltone TTE Tape Delay. Sound is awesome.

Good luck.

i think malekko sounds closer to the real deal,...it has a very "natural/big/roomy" tone that i prefer. of course your best bet is to try them all...but sometimes thats not possible...good luck

You'd have to try the CC. Can't think of anything I don't like about it because it does what it does really well. It's dark sounding, but nice and thick in the mids. If you like a delay to sound like an exact repeat of your tone the CC doesn't do that. I like it because it hides well behind your playing, nice and subtle even when mixed in quite high, gets rid of that dry feeling amp. I'm thinking about having another more full range delay (digital) that I can kick on/off for solos and heavier delayed U2 type stuff, but still just leave the CC on all the time for feel. It's a nice grease....doesn't mess with your tone in a bad way, true bypass.

Thanks for all your help, guys. Hopefully there'll be a new pedal day soon!
