I got on the waiting list for one of these a while back and my name came up finally. But I'm having a hard time deciding if I should do it or not. Anybody on here have/used one? I'm guessing they're overpriced but do they live up to the hype at all? Any opinions on it at all are welcome.

Thanks

It is one of a kind, if!!!! you like a TS voiced pedal, which is much more!!! touch sensitive, dynamic and has much more!!! headroom, and way less bass cut (only a little), less nasally/mid range, it is perfect.

It depends on the amp, for what it is, it kills, do not like it very much in front of Marshalls, IMHO more a pedal in front of Fenders (Silverface/Blackface).

For Marshall Rodenberg 728 (less nasally than TS and KOT, but less! sensitive to dynamics, sings more), also a better boost for me than the also cool neutral Suhr Koko.

The most open pedal, no bass cut, no brittleness, only very slight mid mid-range addition I encountered in front of Fender Amp Jan Ray Vemuran (did not try it in front of Marshall), killer pedal, sounds nothing like a pedal, so worth the extra price, did not try anything which can touch it in this regard. It has that special cranked overdriven Blackface sound, very cool playing feel and dynamics, treats fuzz and stacked pedals very well.

I got a KOT v4 high gain red side pedal, very usable and simple to dial in. Awesome for adding lead textures and has outlasted most if not all of my overdrives. My favourite go to pedal.

If I want a tone to be dialled in absolutely perfect and have the patience to get the right sounds ill go for my rockbox boiling point because I can use a higher voltage in a mix although is noisier as the flexibility comes at a compromise.

All in all I know the KOT is an expensive pedal and does live up to its reputation, if you require something in a similar vein with a smaller footprint and cost check out the POT (Prince of Tone) which ain't to shabby either.

Thanks for the replys! I will most likely give it a shot. I guess if I don't like it I shouldn't lose much money on it. Are there any cons I should be aware of? And is there any reason not to get the high gain option on the red side?

Do not get it, when you like/need a very open, power amp saturation and fuzzy sounding pedal, it has a little sweetness (less than TS), other than that no problems, a friend of mine had also the prince of tone, it was the prince and not that cool sounding in his opinion.

Never tried the high gain option, I have the normal one.

The King of Tone still sells well on the used market, so I would go for it and sell it if you don't like it. I heard a prince of tone recently and was impressed.

KOT is a great pedal for both a clean boost & tube screamer type of boost.

I tried one and did not like it at all. Preferred the Xotic BB or RC booster I have by far.

The other thing is that I'm not really looking to use it for anything heavy or high gain. I have amps that don't need any help for that. I'm only really wanting to try it for lower gain and bluesy stuff. Most likely putting it in front of a Herbert or Dar. Although if it can work as a boost for heavy stuff it'd be a plus.

I definately appreciate the feedback. Both good and bad.

I didn't use it for anything heavy either. It was used with a strat or Tele into a '63 Bassman. The tone was kinda tubby and lacked character IMO.

Good to know. I'm still on the fence on this. The only reason I'm considering it is the resale value. I most likely wouldn't lose much, if any, money on the deal if I don't like it. But it would still tie up ~$250 for a while so I don't know if I want to mess with it.

It is a special TS pedal, so character (it is voiced darker, mid rangy, tubey) does not fit IMHO, especially when you like Xotic pedals, which IMHO are quite (even more than the KOT) characterless, neutral and a little flat sounding.

When you need "character" (kind of little grinding fuzz, open, glassy but also TS like)), try lovepedal eternity, could be very cool in front of multichannel clean amps, also, as mentioned, the Vemuram Jan Ray as it adds cranked Fender Blackface/Silverface distortion. Character with a soft edge "Ford", "Dumble TS Style)" try Vahlbruch Jewell Drive, Timmy.....much more character than Xotic....

Some pedals like SC and less output a lot better...

Also Fuzz; Treble Booster have even more character, but they depend a lot more on pus/sc, you have to try them to evaluate, I really like the HBE Germanium, the interaction with your volume pot is the most stunning experience with these boxes.......they normally have to be the first stomp box in your chain to function properly.

Had one. Tried to jive with it for 3 years. Hated it. Sold it.

These days there are more options for less money for that type circuit. Check out VFE effects. They have a t.s style pedal but with every different clipping option etc. only 149 bucks new

If you like/need/enjoy the voicing of the KOT, its headroom and pick sensitivity, dynamic, playing feel is unique, I tried a lot of pedals, the KOT is unique, see used prices. It is circuit-wise not based on a ts!, it is a tweaked bluesbreaker pedal with more headroom, transparency, less bass cut, voiced like a tubescreamer, the reason it behaves, feels quite differently compared to a ts. My favourite "classic ts clone" is the Moollon overdrive, very thick, sings more (i.e. less dynamics), nicest shimmer on top has also a cool sounding buffer.

Same applies to Vemuram, unique pedal. The hype is justified.

The Lovepedal Eternity has a lot of glass, making multichannel amps (which IMHO mostly lack the Fender sparkleness) Fender like and a little more lively adding grind and raunchiness.

I would try out all of them, different and interesting sound and behaviour.

The more I think about this thing the more I realize I probably wouldn't use it. I already have a few OD's lying around that I don't use. Chances are, this thing would suffer the same fate.

Thanks again for all the input.

The KOT sounds generic to me, nothing special ...
