BTW I know Mike Wead and Andy both are using Line 6 amps (HD 147s I think) currently and Marshalls for backups

From the comments under the vid, it appears to be the Line 6 Spider Valve MKII HD-100. Who would have thought that? Anyway, he has used a lot of amps throughout the years.

Fav combo of mine is still Andy with Michael Denner, there is a certain musicalness to his solo's that I like.

I love Denner's work on Fatal Portrait and Abigail, but I like him better in Mercyful Fate.

Anyone who King gets I'm sure will be talented. He's one of a few musicians who has never done anything I don't like.

I disagree. Mike Wead kicks some serious musical ass, but for me the best guitar pair in KD was Larocque and Pete Blakk. The riffing and soloing on Them, Conspiracy, and The Eye is incredible.

I respectfully disagree.. but only because Pete Black only slightly kicks a little less ass than Wead :) Black/Blakk was also awesome. He played on the Conspiracy and Eye album did he not? Conspiracy for sure. King always surrounds himself with kickass guitar players.

Sorry but Pete Blakk devours Mike Wead. He was a poor replacement for Denner in Fate as well. But as long as King keeps it going I can accept him. He "shreds" the Denner solos too much without the feel Denner had.

Now that's just crazy talk..denner is nothing close to Wead. Never thought much of his style.. very boring. Reminds me of Dave Murray vs. ADrian Smith. Smith always had the beter solos. I thought Wead had great vibrato (better than Denner), better phrasing, and way better chops. Love what he did with Mercyful Fate as well. Anyway no shame in disagreeing!

mmmm.....this thread is relevant to my interests. Gonna have to listen to the harmony lines at the end of the solo on "A Mansion in the Darkness" off of Abigail. Still get chills from that one.

Here:

i believe at that time they were using the lee jackson/metaltronix "perfect connection" (or something like that ) preamps

I read somewhere that it was the Lee Jackson Metaltronix preamp, an Alesis Quadraverb for effects, and I don't know what poweramp.

Personally I think the tones on Them sound quite thin compared to Abigail, and also that 'mid-squawk' sounds forced (which stands out prominently on the song Welcome Home).

While I love the riffs, the throaty roar of the earlier Mercyful Fate boosted Marshall head tones- crush the later 80s stuff.

I like the tone on Them, but this is my favorite metal tone of all time

I fucking LOVE that guitar tone! It was exactly what I was referencing by that "throaty roar", as well as their tones on Melissa

Best pairing they ever had was LAroque and Mike Wead. That was just fucking out of this world lead and rythm wise.

What is the definitive Andy Laroque solo? Hip a guy that didn't pay attention to King Diamond the first time around. Thanks
curt anything he plays is great bro but ABIGAIL and THEM are my two favorite disc's
MICKEY DEE slays on the kit too!

Curt I know I'm late to the party but pretty much anything Andy plays on Abigail or THEM is the scheische. I'm sure you've already checked both of them out and found this to be the case.

;)
