Agree with the above but on the cheap, a 2204 or JMP with the Volume up, a 4x12 with greenbacks or G12H30's and a schaffer replica should get you feeling pretty good about your setup. The tone has never been overly gained up either. I don't think he even cranked the preamp on those Marshalls, he just picked harder and dug in while kicking in that boost from the schaffer. Wizard is the way to go if you have the mula though. Modern amps that do the high gain thing can't help but be more compressed. That just won't work ever for this sound. The sound of rock is amps that cut.

Yes a 2204 or even a clone of one, I just purchased this clone a few weeks ago shown in this video below played by and built from the guy I got it from. Not my first 2204 but before this I would have told you you needed a lot of volume behind it....changed my mind after getting this amp, ACDC all day long, can pull it off surprisingly good at lower volumes and just gets better as you turn it up thru a 4x12 with greenback type speakers.

Wizards are amazing...but if you find a really good Marshall, you'll get there. 82 2204 + 425a cab....sometimes I don't know which I like better.. 2C+ or this 2204 boosted. Its been slightly modded, more low end and a bit more gain but when I throw a boost in front its as good as anything I've owned. Very lucky with this one.

What makes a great sound is those swirling highs...the squeaky highs...harmonic quack that a great Marshall has...but not all of them do. Thats where Wizard comes in...it fucking has it in spades. I first kind of thought my amp was too bright and dialed out the brightness and thats where it became like all the other amps I played....dull city. Quickly realized thats was makes the amp alive. Great crunch is in the highs my friends and thats what makes a great amp and sound that cuts. A lot of people want an amp thats sounds good in the bedroom and alone without a band crashing in the background. Thats why they make them dark sounding...compression...(Friedman....Bogner) to name a couple.......sorry lol...etc. Put these amps in a band setting and they just don't cut it.
Many amp companies have claimed that in a certain mode their amp does the ACDC thing in low gain and its fucking bullshit.
Ive always been missing a certain something with everything else...and this was it. Wizard finally gave me the sound Ive always heard in my head. Fucking nails it and more

They are killer at high volume for sure but the newer models have great masters so even at 3 with a 100 watt you get great tone without bleeding ears. Just fine for a small rehearsal space or at 2 if your a bedroom player
