First of all, I know there are legit guys and great players on Rig Talk who haven't dug the Splawn amps or couldn't get what they wanted out of it after decent periods of trying them out. I'm not speaking of them. There is no way everyone is going to like one amp and that's totally cool. It's just funny when you meet people from online in my store and you were just sure they were going to rip by their demeanor and attitude and coming off like an expert online. Then you hear them play and you are just stunned. This has happened to me dozens of times. Then later you have to read their review of what you had just heard them do in your store.

Here's a recent, week old example:

As a Splawn dealer I see some weird stuff. We had this guy recently come in and he wanted to try out the Quick Rod. So most likely if he's in LA and knows about Splawn he's on some sort of forum or something. So he brings his guitar in and plugs into the amp and really seems like he knows what he's doing so I just hang back and don't bother him. So he starts playing and the guy is......... uhm....... how do I say it? Well let's just say he wasn't a runner-up for the Ozzy gig ;)

So he starts playing without touching a knob. 10 seconds in he's like "uhg, this thing is horrible. I don't like the tone of it". By tone I asked if he meant the amount of gain or the EQ. He said "both". He asked if he could play the Bogner Ecstasy Classic. I'm like, "The Splawn has knobs on it". He hadn't touched a knob or the OD1/OD2 switch or the Gears knob. He wasn't interested in turning a knob. But he loved the Ecstasy Classic without turning a knob on it either. It wasn't really well dialed in either.

So as he left I was just thinking "there goes a new confirmed Splawn hater out into the world to give his expert opinion to whoever will read it."

For years, I have known within 30 seconds if a single channel, vintage style amp was going to sound good or not. But modern amps with all these features and switches and controls need to be delved into a little. Can you imagine playing a Boogie MKIV and not turning a knob to try and get it where you want it? How about playing a CCV-100 or one of the many feature Fortin mods without flipping switches or turning knobs and immediately and all expert like declaring it sucked? That's what this guy did and I wonder what forum he's sharing his expertise and Splawn experience in.

Damn..

At first I thought you were gonna judge the poor guy because of his playing, but his attitude is full of nonsence.

must be hard to deal with 'em guys !!

In my opinion you don't have to be a great player to get good tone. You do have to be fairly open to turning the knobs though or trying a different pickup. The guy had an Ibanez Satriani model. I don't know what pickups were in it or if he would have preferred Gear 3 OD2 with the gain cranked instead of the Gear 1 OD1 with the gain at noon that it was set to.

What I have learned over the years is that if someone seems at all receptive to suggestions on possibly getting what they are looking for out of the amp I am happy to offer suggestions. Normally guys that are good players or tone guys want a run through if they aren't on familiar ground with something. It's just those guys with chips on their shoulders and predetermined ideas of how something is going to sound that get all offended when you offer suggestions, so normally you just kind of set back and see if there is anything else they would like to try and just be nice and helpful.

Some times you just want to grab their guitar and go "really?" and then set the amp and play it and go "so are you sure this amp sucks, or maybe there was something else in the chain that was the weak point"? Of couse you don't but you can dream right?

The Quick Rod is definitely a rippin amp. Some don't like it, but isn't that the case with ANY amp.

Welll....u know the saying....Opinions are like assholes...everyone has them and most of them stink.

Dude....I still tweak my splawn different about every 6 months, and a eq it different per pedal, per channel, and per gear.

I cannot be arsed to turn knobs. If the amp doesn't come out of the box sounding good, it's not for me.

I run all my amps with everything at zero except the presence and treble on FULL... gain full on 'em all.

All of my amps sound incredible this way.

The first time I tried a Mark IV I didn't know what I was doing and was about 19. I really wanted that Recto tone and I couldn't find it...I judged that amp at that point as an amp that I've heard other people get good tones from, but it was "not for me".

So of course I bought the Recto, which I still have and like.
But now that I am willing to twist knobs and explore an amp's capabilities, I sure wish I would've bought the Mark IV.

I'd love to try out a Splawn someday as I think it would fit perfectly with what I'm doing a the moment. But no dealers in this neck of the wood, at least none that I know of.

I'd like to add something to this thread, but I don't think I can... LOL! :D

+1 me too
