I have learned as well thru the years to be a little PATIENT with amps to play them for a while before tossing in the towel. Some amps reguardless how dialed or what guitar are not for everyone.
What I do like is when I get a new amp........set all the knobs at noon,
and it sounds GREAT with not much tweaking. Of course we all know that dont happen too often.
But yeah the music 'experts' that come into the stores make me laugh.
But when I was 14 years old I probably was one of them assholes as well! :D

the 5150 III was like this for me. i still wouldnt mind owning one just for the fuck of it but i still go back and forth on it all the time. at one point i thought it had a "thin" characteristic to it overall. other times i thought it sounded phenominal.

currently for me its a toss up of a custom baron amplifier, a 5150 III, or an FJA modded "nick" mod jcm 800

i guess i don't feel so bad about my pedestrian amps anymore after reading this. can't find ONE good tone in a splawn? hmmm? i suppose you could suggest they remove thier elbows from thier ears.. but they probably wouldn't get that either.

I owned a Splawn Nitro when they 1st came out. Think it was like #7 or something.
I was in the amp "flipping" mode of buying/trying/selling.
I thought it sounded good. Didnt blow me away but wasnt the worst I heard. at that time I never gave amps much of a chance since I was already looking forward to my NEXT amp!
So I sold it off and I forgot what I got in after that, but it didnt sound as good as the Nitro.....
So out the door it went!
I would like to get a Quickrod one of these days though.

i had never heard the FJA "nick" mod or the baron amplifier's before then to be completely 100% honest. :dunno:

i've heard clips of the powerball where it sounded like ass - i really want to play one in person badly. with that amplifier i wont like it 1 bit without the right speakers and cabinets - so the only way i can bouce for that amplifier is if i throw out the cash for 2 cabinets to go with it with speakers as well. so now, if you recall, i was in the process of building a rack setup as well but backed out because the "cons" outweighed the "pros" in that setup. the ENGL is not off the table though.

unrealistically i wish i could own them all - the engl, an FJA marshall, a baron amplifier, and a 5150 III just for shits and giggles.

to me its a hard pick just one - im still have plans to go play a powerball in georgia from an engl dealer later this year as soon as i get my ESP off the boat across the big pond. im expecting that amplifier to really blow me away but after hearing baron's amplifiers and Jerry's magic on a marshall its tough competition.

and another setback was the ENGL that i wanted to own just sold here on rig-talk. that was the one i was going to try and bounce for but couldnt get my 5150 to sell. i also dont have the cash to throw around to pull an old danno or an old brad. i am currently considering all the options and weighing them against each other before hand so i dont waste my time, money, and more importantly someone elses time and money. when im serious to throw around ill definately be bugging the piss out of jerry and baron amplifiers for some answers. but to be wise about this take patience and research on each choice individually

ive spent 3 months with a 5150 III at a sam ash, now its engl's time. next i wont bother with baron or jerry until the questions i ask will be worth either one of their time.

Damn..

At first I thought you were gonna judge the poor guy because of his playing, but his attitude is full of nonsence.

must be hard to deal with 'em guys !!

In my opinion you don't have to be a great player to get good tone. You do have to be fairly open to turning the knobs though or trying a different pickup. The guy had an Ibanez Satriani model. I don't know what pickups were in it or if he would have preferred Gear 3 OD2 with the gain cranked instead of the Gear 1 OD1 with the gain at noon that it was set to.

What I have learned over the years is that if someone seems at all receptive to suggestions on possibly getting what they are looking for out of the amp I am happy to offer suggestions. Normally guys that are good players or tone guys want a run through if they aren't on familiar ground with something. It's just those guys with chips on their shoulders and predetermined ideas of how something is going to sound that get all offended when you offer suggestions, so normally you just kind of set back and see if there is anything else they would like to try and just be nice and helpful.

Some times you just want to grab their guitar and go "really?" and then set the amp and play it and go "so are you sure this amp sucks, or maybe there was something else in the chain that was the weak point"? Of couse you don't but you can dream right?
Maybe he didn't like it because it lacked a talent switch!

I took all the knobs off my Quick Rod, and I still hate it.

Squeeze out some rhythm riffs with reasonable timing and stuff.
I'm sorry, but I refuse to do that.

I hear ya brother. I so badly want several amps right now that I stay up at night looking at websites and pictures and listening to sound clips until my head spins :loco:

Unfortunately, I just can't buy anything for a couple years when I'm done with school. And I won't sell my Recto. I have a strange bond with it

I've been playing an XTC101B (10th one made) for over a year at a shop, but they're asking 3,100 for it...
Also dying for an Einstein, Marsha and Baron

I'm wondering why you didn't just plug into the QR while he was foolin' around on the Bogner? Grab a Charvel, plug in, rip a few nice riffs..."just to make sure a tube hadn't died or something" you say ;) Educate the boy, so he comes back saying :Whoa! how did you make it sound like that!? Anwer: " Ahhh...turned a few knobs...sounds good eh!"

I know some guys are just maybe not worth the effort. :aww:

I usually find that I like or can get a useable sound out of most amps I play through. I have a preference, like the rest of us. But I can honestly say, that I've only played like 2-3 amps that I REALLY disliked.

+1 anyone played one of those industrial amplifiers?

they were at the guitar show in SC last year with their main head and cabinet setup. they turned on the amplifier and the guy said wait a sec while i get the guitar in tune and was tuning it up - OMG that amp sounded terrible

i listened politely and shook the guys hands - they wanted me to play through it but i took a business card instead and walked away :dunno:

IMHO every splawn i've ever heard or played walked all over those amplifiers :dunno:

Agreed. I can't tolerate line6 stuff for more than 10 minutes tho.... but if we're talking tubes amps, some won't fit your playing/style but they can have an interesting tone.

I'm gonna ruin my cred here... I actually like the Krank's that I've played.

The new Spider Valve is pretty good. My go-to amp at GC.. LOL! :D

Yeah I run into that with guitars. I love how single-coils sound, but dammit... I can't get comfortable playing them for squat! I can use them in the neck slot, but bridge? Forget about it.

I don't know if you're kidding or not, but I think they made some huge improvements in the SV MKII. By the way, did you happen to notice the "Savage" bank of presets?

i havent had the chance to play through a new spiper valve - been meaning too :)

You did a great job! The amp started to release the smell of smoked meat when the Savage presets were selected. It was unreal!
