Get royally f**cked on taxes even when you sell used gear to the States? Heads up to you, don't declare the full value. Anyone know what to do to avoid this reaming?

Edit: Got shafted for buying used gear from the States...

I have never been dinged when selling gear. Buying on the other hand...I've been nailed hard!

Are you using Canada Post when selling / shipping? I have never had a problem through them.

If you don't declare full value you can't get insurance for the true value. Not a big deal on a low value item but if a $3000 guitar or amp gets trashed it's a big hit! The other option is get them to declare it as a warranty return. It sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. Never use Fedex or UPS either as they charge crazy brokerage fees.

Why are you getting dinged on taxes when selling to the U.S.? You're doing something wrong.

Yes something is fishy. I need to call them and get to the bottom of it. So none of you have paid taxes when selling to the states? I got f**cked big time an I mean big time. Over $400. Thats whack!

Oh shit, I read that wrong. Never heard of that before, What carrier did you use?

basically I tried to help the buyer out by saying the amp was being send for modification/repair work. I don't know what happened. I will never do this again. Buyer is responsible for all fees.

Did you ship via FedEx or UPS and forget to check the box "Recipient to cover all brokerage charges and taxes/VAT"? Sounds to me like they might have charged these back to you, the shipper.

Did you include the appropriate paperwork? There is a U.S. Customs form that needs to be filled out for warranty work and manufacturer repairs that needs the manufacturer's signature!

I bet you this is the problem. When Brad sent my Kemper, this exact thing happened to him.

I just got a $400+ tax bill for a Wizard I got 4 years ago.

Why don't you guys just become the 51st state already? :D

Harper's trying, trust me, he's on it

I am pretty sure I told them to charge anything to the receiver. Anyway can't get ahold of anyone to help, gotta call during business hours. Makes me re-consider freeing up some amps. Might as well keep them since I already paid good money...why pay the government twice for taxes I already paid!

We'd probably pay less taxes, so I am down. Seriously I thought NAFTA took care of all this.

Something got fkd up here... It's the Buyer that ought to be paying any taxes. Seems like something wrong - screw it. Wait for them to come to you. I don't think you'll find answers phoning and emailing the "authoritative bodies" in this matter. It's a racket. No one knows jack except for you owing money to someone or something for some reason.

I have sold several items here and on other forums. No such issue. I use Canada Post Xpress post. Buyer is always aware that they are responsible for taxes/import duties/charges.

The same for when I buy....I'm always aware that I am on the hook for it.

I was thinking there should be a sticky somewhere listing all the Canadian (and other countries, why not) buyers and sellers, so all of us guys can buy/sell intra-country easily and save on those dumbass fees and taxes.
