I'm curious if any of you guys out there chicken pick ala Albert Lee, Brent Mason, Brad Paisley ect? I've been a huge country fan for years. I love metal and HR too but I have to get my share of twang to feel the balance

I do it a bit. I learned it to try and mix classical and rock picking technique from my first guitar teacher.

My dad played country guitar so I grew up with it. I used to hate it and would alway run from country. It's funny how things can change. Most of my gigging is playing country. I'm now a closet rocker haha

I love it... I started incorporating it in the mid 90's when rock turned that grunge variety. A lot of good guys from the 80's started moving over to the country scene as they still appreciated good playing/ technique.

It's genre that you can still have chops and it's not frowned upon. Lately I've been getting into all of the old guys like Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed, James Burton ect. I use those techniques a lot rock playing too. Fun stuff!

I would love to get better at it - can you recommend any cool vids / sites to help me learn more??

Doug Seven has a lot of courses on chicken picken. The most important thing is to get good at banjo rolls and double stops. The cook thing is that you can uses these techniques in rock too w/o sounding like a country lick. Plus. some of the country pickers are just badass. Jerry Reed and James Burton come to mind.

I recently got into the real technique because I realized I've been doing it the whole time I have played.

Danny Gatton, Chet Atkins and James Burton and great places to start. Brent Mason has some great vids and I think Vince Gill does too. Brad Paisley is the current popular beast at pickin' . You can find some good free lessons on YouTube as well. I mean it's pretty much just hybrid picking with emphasis on double stops, sting bending and pedal tones. Look for lessons on those 3 techniques.

I 2nd the Brent Mason stuff. Or just watch every YT video he is on.

I been watching some Greg Koch videos on Youtube to get better at it.

I do it sometimes. My picking style is a hybrid pick and fingers (thumb/index hold pick, while middle, ring and pinkie take care of the plucking). Been playing like this for a few years now.

oops, Cheers, Lucius

...ala Steve Howe.

Was always something I wanted to learn but something I know I'll never be good at. Like sweep picking. Although the other reason I don't spend time learning to sweep pick is that it's so over used.

My band does Hotwired. The second solo is brilliant, took me forever to get that one down.

Our very own Andy Wood is a chicken pickin monster.

I started out a metalhead,(probably still am)then the grunge thing hit and songs went all gloomy, doomy, downer, dark, depressing.I guess that's why its called grunge(nothing wrong w/it if ya dig it), but it forced my hand to check out Paisley,Hiland,Urban,Gill,Gatton, even Doc Watson.Great Players! These guys are virtual encyclopedias of killer tone, technique, and great songwriting.
