Any fans of Gibson LP junior?

I know it's an SG Junior and not an LP Junior

I had visited Guitar Center once before in Dallas and as I mentioned there were multiple persons playing different instruments simultaneously which was a bit chaotic but I like the fact people are still going to stores. Especially seeing the younger generation drooling their dream gear and trying the gear out warms my mind. Ended up buying a TS9 and the salesguy was cool; he handed me the LP Jr and I played a couple of licks he said ”whoah, nice! Please try everything You want” and gave me a fist bump. 🙏

Gibson has done many many iterations of the single and double cut junior over the years. The current single cut has a 50’s style neck, but the current double cut has a 60’s style neck. The double cut plays very similar to the single, but at least to my ears, they don’t have as much tone as the single cuts. You can search back to the 2001-2012 year runs of the single cut that had a 60’s neck, but they’re pretty different guitars compared to the one you played from the modern era. They didn’t have the body shelf like the 50’s and current juniors had, and they also had the lightning wrap around bridge.

I’ve had juniors from just about every run from the USA line to CS and even vintage. I agree the current neck on the 50’s Junior is uncomfortable, but that’s because the flatten the back of the neck too much, leaving uncomfortable shoulders on the neck. The current CS junior necks are more comfortable to play and very r9 like. Round c shape but not huge. My 55’ has the second thinnest neck on any junior I’ve owned, the thinnest being the first run BJA Junior from 06-11’. An earlier 2006-2008 BJA would be closest in specs to the one you played at GC, has the shelf and the original angled bridge studs, but has a very slim 60’s style neck.

Ok so right now I'm seeing some production Jr's online, one at $1,599 and the other at $3,999.

Do you mean one of those models are made with a more flattened back of the neck?

I’ve noticed that it’s a difference between how the USA necks get shaped vs the cs shop necks. Most of the USA line guitars I have seem to have the back of the neck a bit flatter and not as defined of a c. The custom shop neck profiles always feel a bit more true to me if that makes sense.

Gotcha. I played a custom shop jr the other day and just about fell in love with the thing. I haven't played a production model yet though. Sounds like I should try one in person before pulling the trigger. Thanks for the advice!

I had a 58 double cut Jr. It was a one trick pony but a killer guitar.
