So on Saturday night, as we're walking out of the convention center at NAMM, I see this dude walk past me, and realize it's Richard Patrick from Filter. I've always loved Filter. Title of Record, and the Amalgamut are just amazing, awesome heavy alternative records.

So Me and Matt (EWSEthan) walk and catch up with him, and introduce ourselves and say hi. I gotta say, he's probably THE nicest dude that I've ever met out at one of these shows. He walked and talked with us, and then talked to me, Matt, and our bass player for close to 15 minutes on the street corner of Katella and Harbor.

He was telling us some crazy stories, and really said how different (in a bad way) the music industry is nowadays.

He said back in 1995 when Filter first started, the record company gave him $400K to just go home and make a record, and come back when it's done. When he needed more money, he got it. And when it came time to do a video, boom: $400K, there ya go. For his latest video, they gave him $10K.

He said that unless you're a Mainstream Rap, Pop, or Country artists (the only artists who actually move CD's at Target and WalMart), record labels want nothing to do with you. He said rock acts have it the hardest, because most of their fans are pretty tech savvy, and are more inclined to just download the music for free from somewhere.

But on top of all that, he told us to just keep playing rock, and keep it alive. It was a real eye-opening, but inspirational conversation.

I just have a renewed respect for that guy, because he's 42, has a wife and 2 kids, and is still rocking because he loves to do it. Filter wasn't ever THE most popular band, and is even less so now, but that's not stopping him from creating music.

I'm downloading the new album right now (legally), and it's REALLY f*cking good.

Yeah....I was big into them back in the day.
"Take a Picture" is still one of my all time favorite songs.

Cool  I met him and the other guitar player while they were on tour for Title of Record, just out side of Atlantic city N.J. back in 2000
Me and my buddy walked into a bar out side of A.C. and they were just sitting there at the corner of the bar..
Ended up hanging out with them drinking and B.s'n for almost 2hrs
They said they didnt like the vibe of the casino they were playing so they hitched a ride to have some beers outside of the city

Good dudes..

I LOVE Filter!!! Title Of Record is in my top 10 of all time easily. And like you said Amalgamut is their heaviest and another great record. Very cool that you got to meet him. I've heard he's very down to earth and just a nice guy with his head on straight. Thanks for sharing.

Hey Man, Nice Shot.... That was brutal when it came out.

Huge fan, everyone who likes alt rock should own Short Bus, Title of Record and The Amalgamut

 yeah man Filter is cool. i didnt know they put out anew cd, im gonna get it

Whenever I hear Filter they remind me of a local band called Floater, who has a PNW cult following but never broke. Great style, sort of the next step of the light/heavy writing style.

hell yes.....love filter. army of anyone's one album as well. dude's got a great voice.

Thanks for that heads-up. Re-instills my faith that there are still some genuine good rock guys around not in it for the MTV fame. Downloading new album on itunes now as we speak. A lot of the clips are reminiscent of the Short Bus album and pretty grungy with Reznor's hand obviously in it somewhere. Good stuff.

They definitely have their own sound, which is a good thing. Thought the Amalgamut was an extremely good disc, still listen to it pretty regularly.

There was a Song they did on the Crow City of Angels Sound track...
think it was called "Geritol".......

that....was a KICK ASS SONG!!

Guys the new CD is just insanely good. It definitely gets back to the old school Filter sound. i.e. HEAVY.

I heard in an interview that he wanted to prove to everyone that he wasn't getting soft as he got older, and man, he proved it with this CD.

That's pretty cool. Glad to hear he was 'normal'.

I saw this vid posted on the Splawn boards recently. Sounds pretty good. Guitarist is using some sort of Splawn - you can see it at the end.

:rawk:

What's Next on Anthems is cool as hell. Check out a cover for "Happy Together" that they did on a soundtrack.....this would be a great cover version for a club band.

Have always been into Filter since Short Bus, awesome stuff.

You know his brother was the terminator in T2 right?

Too bad Geno Lenardo isn't with them anymore. They lost a bit of their trademark sound IMO when he left. Patrick still writes a mean groove/hook but Geno added great background stuff. Oh well, still a great band. And like Steve said, Army of Anyone put out a GREAT album with Patrick. IMO it was far superior to the latest STP.

Ha, I haven't heard the name Floater in years! I used to see them play in Albany from '96 - '98. I thought they'd for sure make it "big!" I miss Oregon. I grew up in Corvallis and moved away at the age of 20 in 2001. Now I live in Massachusetts. Floater used to gig with the weirdest bands. One time, they actually gigged with the Cherry Poppin' Daddies before they hit it big. I also saw them with Sweaty Nipples, post Greg Eklund.
