This is in C without a boost:

Hot damn!

Yeah, but that clip is the 100 watt version.

I own both the EVH 5150III 100 and 50 watt amps.

the 50 can hold it's own as well as the 100 watt in terms of metal tones.

I prefer both amps without a boost (and I owned a 6505+ for 6 years and preferred that without a boost).

The 50 watt has slight tonal/voicing differences from the 100. It seems to have more treble/presence (the 100 watt IMO is pretty dark), and it doesn't have as much low mids, which isn't a bad thing.

Here is a thread I posted on Andy Sneap's forum...
Very unscientific, but here are some clips:

First, all the controls on both amps were set the same on the lead channel. Here are the pics:

Here are the raw, non-EQ'd clips. these are straight from the 57 on my Diezel 4x12 into the DAW. I lowered the waveform volume of the 100 watt to closely match the 50. At the same volume knob setting, the 50 was quieter (obviously).

Limiter is added on the master buss to get proper levels.

50 watt:

100 watt:

The 50 watt is definitely brighter comparatively.

Now,

here they are with a little bit of EQ in my DAW...Still the same miked tones. These to me sound pretty much the same:

50 watt:

100 watt:

Mic was placed with using the 50 watt, so I'm sure that plays into it some, but overall I love both amps. the 50 watt's brightness makes it sit easier with less EQ overall. It also gets just as thick, but doesn't quite have the bark in the mids that the 100 watt has.

I would think the 5150 III with be able to do metal with no problem at all. I'm not a metal player, but it has so much gain on the third channel and it seems really tight.

That sounds fantastic! The 50w actually sounds better to me. How's the preamp noise? Is it going to need a gate or could do without? I expect some sizzle, but the noise from Peavey 5150s is unbearable without pedals to tame it.

I don't doubt it has enough gain, but whether it whether it stays tight and has that sort of presence with a percussive edge will decide whether I start gunning for one. For 1000 it seems perfect for a mostly bedroom player. It even has and shorting speaker outputs to use without a connected cabinet, using the line out for impulses if I need silence.

The closest store with one is about an hour away. I might to take a weekend trip soon.

IMO with any high gainer there will be some amp hiss when the volume is high enough. That said, I do think both my 100 watt and my 50 watt is quieter then my 5150 or my 6505+ ever were.

Also, this amp sounds a bit tighter than the 100 watt IMO, and with the adjustable resonance, you can make it even tighter in the low. I prefer the amp with the resonance all the way up, though. Even with it all the way up, it is still as tight as my 6505+ IMO. Maybe it's because the amp is just more refined IMO.

Here's another clip. This is sloppy as it is a new demo for my band. But the tone is a little thinner with a bit more presence.

again, single 57 on my Diezel 4x12 with V 30's

I did this one at the end of last week:

the 5150III is a 5150 with more Soldano DNA (the peavey already has a lot of the SLO circuit, but not close enough to sound similar)
it should have better dynamics and clarity than the peavey, more like a 50w Soldano, but similar amounts of gain to the Peavey

^This sounds like a dream amp! GAS levels increasing!

The 50watter really is a fantastic amp, I haven't had this much fun with a new amp in years! :)
The 2x12" cab really sings as well.

The 5150 mini has more gain in the crunch channel, which is a good thing. It's a LOT easier to lug around compared to the 100 watter.

I played mine last nite through an Avatar 112 cab, and it sounded HUGE.

Just buy a used XXX or JSX for $400-$500 or the new XXXII for $1200. No boosts needed. May need a gate though. But you do with most all amps anyways.

The 50w can cop metal tones with EASE... believe me... no boost necessary...

Since I bought my 5153, the TS-9 that was a mainstay on my pedal board has come off. The amp is stupid tight and there really is no need for a boost. Sure, Channel 2 sounds good with one, but channel 3 is just so much fun to play with.

It can DEFINITELY do metal without a boost. I miss mine.
