Any opinions on the Dimarzio Super Distortion?

I have the Charvel SO Cal and would like to take the stock bridge pu out.

I know Maiden used/uses it.
It would mainly be for 80's metal and rock.

The only other thing I thought would maybe be an Evolution

Thanks in advance

The only full size humbucker that I like by Dimarzio is the Fred.

I had one on my BC Rich Gunslinger back in the day. I didn't like it. It was very muddy. I like the Duncan Distortion much better.
I tend to LOVE Dimarzio pickups in the neck and Duncans in the bridge give that a shot.

Don't try to talk him out of it, he's very set on this ;)

LOL! :D

Very nice Pick-up but with the standard ceramic magnet in it it can be a bit grainy. Try an AlNiCo5 magnet and be surprised...

Giga.

I have one, don't love it, don't hate it. It's a decent pickup. I'd consider selling it. PM and make an offer if you want.

Came it stock in a Dean Time Capsule V and a RR Jackson Polka dot I owned. Very 80's very tight and aggresive. I would think it would be perfect for Maiden. Doesnt hurt that they use them.

In mahogany bodies and swamp ash its very good sounding. In alder, not so much. What is the stock pickup?

My pickup of choice. Has some serious midrange grind to it. Randy, Ace, Boston, and quite a few other pro players have made some killer records and played many concerts with this pickup. Should you install it, you will be in good company.

It's okay, I was just suggesting a Dimarzio.
I have no hesitation to go with SD pick ups.

I only have the Dimarzio because they came stock. I believe several of the other owners with the So Cal model took out the stock Dimarzio.

I might be in the minority, but I dislike the Duncans I've tried in the neck position but like Dimarzios alot and vice-versa with the bridge pickups.

I can tell you that the 59 and Jazz I've tried in the neck didn't do much for me at all, for sure!

What specifically don't you like about it? Bass too flubby maybe?

i suggested an evo once and got flamed for it. back in the day it seemed that the super was the pickup of choice.

I love the super distorsion, it's the sound in my head from all that older rock.

I happen to have one in it's case from the store, unused, if you're interested.

The Super Distortion and Evolution are two totally different pickups, IMO. The Super Distortion is VERY fat and thick (almost too thick at times). It has a very vintage quality to it, in terms of tightness and gain quality. I'd say it's probably the best pickup for a single pickup guitar, as the highs never get too bright. The Evo, on the other hand, is VERY tight and a bit on the bright side. It'll show your nuances a lot more, so it's a fairly sensitive pickup at times. Both can do 80s metal, but they do it a bit different. To me, the Evo is more "in your face," and the Super Distortion has more of that classic "wall of sound" kinda thing going on.
