I just re-discovered Shark Island this week. I have been a big Bill and Ted's fan since inception, but never really listened to anything other than Dangerous and Father Time. Great sounding band and I remember reading somewhere where Axl Rose advertently took some notes on stage presence from the lead singer Richard Black.

Another band I just discovered called Icon which has gotten on my repeat list for the last couple of days. I love the aggressive attitude in the music! I wish I was around to see these guys perform on the Strip 25 years ago.

I liked Icon's "Right Between the Eyes", and SI wasn't bad!

loved shark island , Icon not ringing a bell right now but will investigate..

and 1 more from that era... not to hijack your thread but now im surfing .. lol

Richard Black from Shark Island was well-known as one of the coolest frontmen around. I thought they were a good band. Nothing about them floored me. They could have used a more hot shot guitarist IMO.

Regarding Icon...... Icon FREAKING RULED. The first album and "Night of the Crime" were killer albums. One of my favorite bands from the 80's. By the time of "Right Between the Eyes" their original singer had left and guitarist John Aquilino had left. Both a major loss as shown by that album. The singer especially. I didn't like that new guy at all.

Speaking of Beat the Bullet...I've been listening to Danger Danger a lot this week too.

All right, who wants to tell me what the hell is going on in that Icon video? Is that the same attacking group of pulmbers from the Take On Me video?

Richard Black definitely has a swagger to his performance.

On the RBTE album there is an edge that is more prevalent than the Night of the Crime album. NOTC just doesn't do it for me. There are a couple decent songs like Hammer and Danger. The songs Right between the Eyes and Double Life to me show a better vocal performance than anything I heard from NOTC....IMO. The guitar work and raw angst still doesn't live up to the debut album.

andy timmons stole my girl friend back in 90, ill never listen to danger danger again ... true story but he probably actually did me a favor ...

Used to be on the Shark Island road crew humping gear every Friday and Saturday night when they were the house band at Gazzari's on the strip and YES--Axl stole every move from Richard. The "Law of the Order" album is my only professional album credit. You can find me in the "Special Thanks" section.

Still have some great old Shark Island (S'kool Bus) album that I converted to MP3 and if you're still one of the faithful, their latest release, "Gathering of the Faithful" is a good listen as well.

Icon was out of Phoenix, not LA, at least not in the beginning. Saw them play many times at such high-class venues as The Mason Jar and Graham Central Station (a Country "super club") back in the day. They were among a bevy of cool Phoenix '80s bands that included Risque, Surgical Steel, Rip and Tear, and Kaiser. I particularly enjoyed Risque, who had an instrumental called "Wing Nut" that really cooked, dual lead style. Those were some days (and nights!).

Matt

And we can't forget WILDSIDE with Brent Woods:

Les Pauls, whores, cops.....now thats rock and roll! :D

Album credit...that's great!

Gathering is good huh...hard to get a copy of that album at a reasonable price it seems.

Really? You should be able to order the disc from their site for about $13. I'll look into it or see if Richard has any "promo" copies lying about.

Cheers,
