I recently picked up a 72 Traynor YGM-3. It sounds like an 18 watt Marshall cranked and a Deluxe Reverb clean. I paid $190 for it and sent it to Don Butler for some service and tweaks. The only other thing I did was install a Celestion Blue. It's a great small club amp. It takes pedal great and has a closed back. It's has a nice old school tone. Anyone into these underrated amps?

I don't know about the old ones but Randy Van Sykes a few years back convinced me these amps sound good. Guy on here I haven't seen in some time...nailing killer tones with a newer traynor.

LOVE them !!! Quality construction and a classic "mix" of Marshall and Fender. Highly underated. Nice score !!!

I had some mods done but nothing over the top. Adding a choke gave it a better feel and slowing down the trem made it more usable.

I might grab a YBA-1 down the road. I'm digging this clip.

They are decent amps but don't get too much love here in Canada (where they are made). Always been a "poor-man's" alternative to Marshall / Fender. The tone is good, but not as good as those. They make for great rentals though because they are super cheap through Long and McQuade/Yorkville! I rented one of their v30 4x12 cabs for a recording project in the summer.
I also think their YBA-1 anniversary amp with the vertical 2x12 with v30's is a killer portable rig.

I bought a YBA-1 for 400$ and tweaked it slightly in the preamp and added better filtering and a proper grounded power chord. (I got a qicked shock from it one day prior) Anyway was a nice compromise between the Marshall kerrang and that glassy Fendertone. Kind of wish I had not sold it now but hey, how many amps do I really need. The newer Traynor stuff is priced extremely well and they sound really good. Surprised more people don't play them.

My first tube amp was a YCS-100 head. That amp got me through a couple years in college playing in a funk/blues/rock band. It always sounded really good, a lot of fond memories for sure.

Just because of you I looked on CL and found one of these little bastards, now I HAVE to go get it and tinker...so thanks for that ! Thankfully I already have a couple of Celestion Blues...what other "tweaks" did your amp guy do ?

He did some voicings tweaks to the tone circuit but I'm not sure of what he did. His name is Don Butler aka Toneman, look him up. These are cool little amps, mine puts out 23 watts clean and 30watts dirty.

My only experience with Traynors is getting electrocuted by my friend's old head, so not a fan personally- made me paranoid of any amp with metal toggle switches, lol. I know they can be good bang for your buck deals though- I think Ian Thornley from Big Wreck mentioned using them, or at least their cabs, a lot?

Yup as mentioned, happened to me too. Metal toggle switches aren't the problem, the two prong power chord is! I had to switch mine out and after that, no worries.

You could always do the three prong cord and plastic handle toggles, simple enough...

So I found one cheap (bought it from a guy at a Music Go Round store in the parking lot for 20 bucks more than they were going to give him for it as a trade in for store credit) and it's a great little amp. Mine only has 2 inputs. How do you date them ? Is it on the chassis somewhere ? Going to put the Celestion Blue in tonight or tomorrow...
