Anybody ever DIY fix a 5150 footswitch before?

Just wondering. Not open to giving Peavey ~$40 on a simple dual DPDT switching arrangement in a plastic case as a replacement, I'd much rather fix the one I have. Just wondering if anybody has ever repaired theirs and has any tips or guidelines before I snip the wire off and dig in. It doesn't work basically, there's bad connections somewhere. I'd love to open it up and see what's going on inside, but it doesn't seem to be very "power-user friendly" in that regard. Can't be opened without being damaged it seems to me.

inside the housing you should find 2 switches and 2 leds with perhaps a resistor in series, so nothing fancy inside.
Are you sure it is the footswitch itself or may be the head has some error within the switching circuitry?

When I first got my peavey ultra plus, it has the same switch as the 5150. I found a bad connection at the end that goes into the amp, some solder joints were bad. it was the part under the rubber right under the silver metal part

once you open it, it is next to impossible to get it closed. i have tape holding my old 5150 switch together because of that.

I sure hope it's the pedal... but I just opened it up and it seems to be alright. Unless one of the switches itself is malfunctioning. What's happening is that the channels are just switching chaotically. Could be a dirty terminal on the amp. I'll have to buy some deoxit.

Nahh, mine's got a TS jack, but since you said that I opened it up and it looks alright to me. Good enough to carry signal anyway.

one of the ends on the cable are crimped too tight and bighting into the wire grounding out your channel switching. im 100% sure this is the problem, find the cable end where the crimping for the 7 pin DIN plug clamping arms look too tight, loosen them, and your problem is solved.

edit:

nvm - you mentioned you have a mono 1/4" plug.

disregard for TS plugs, but this is a well known problem for the 7 pin DIN plugs.

I could swear those has the standard TRS plug with just channel select and effects loop on/off

Sometimes those cords get a bad spot in them that will switch automatically when the cord it moved or just for the hell of it..

I looked again, you are correct, it is TRS. The wire is just two conductor with a ground wire, so it should be an easy enough fix. Thanks.

Let me know if you can fix it, I have a Black Abs plastic one with 2 switches/ 2 red led's with removable TRS cable..
The cable got messed up like I described previously so I fixed it, But I do not use it anymore..
Plus I painted half of it Yellow so I could see it in the dark..
Replacement cables are easy to find for it..

As long as you are not in a hurry for it you can have it, But I wont be able to send it out to you for a few weeks...

Most likely the cord is bad at the cord keeper insert.
Easiest fix is to install a stereo jack in the hole, and use an off the shelf TRS cable.
If you have troubles in the future, just replace the cable.

I own a 5150 and had fixed the cable plenty of times, installing a jack is the best way to go.

BTW - Any TRS switch will work, Marshall, Krank, etc.

@TeleBlaster, this is a very good idea. I did this with another footswitch I had. If I remember correctly, the Traynor footswitches come standard with a jack. Let's you use a longer cable if needed.

If you have a multimeter, check the continuity of your footswitch cable before going further. For your info, the tip of the 1/4 stereo plug is for the FX, the ring for the channel switching.

You would probably be better off building one. You can get parts for it for like 15 bucks at radio shack and make it with a cable that isnt permanently attached.

hey guys, i need some help as well, and it seems you guys know what your doing, i have a 5150II and the footswitch for it isnt working anymore, the led for the effects loop got crushed and now it doesnt work at all, my buddy (with almost the same rig i have) let me borrow the same footswitch to make sure it wasnt a cable or whatnot and it worked with his, i pulled it apart and literally it looks like there is no redundacy, looks like you have to have that LED lit up for it to send the signal back to the amp? am i wrong? how do i fix this? thanks guys.
