Nevermind, I found it...1978, Roy Clark cover. I wouldn't say it was luck, but one thing is sure, back in those days, you really had to be a good / accomplished guitarist to be mentioned in those magazines...not the trendy, sponser-paid interviews they have today.

It was Guitar for the practing musician,mid to late 80's.
