Anybody see Dimmu Borgir?

I am not a dummy burger fan at all, but I can totally understand going if you thought suffocation and especially hypocrisy (who are one of the best live metal bands ive ever seen) were on the bill

I've seen DB at a couple of festivals and they always sounded like crap, but I honest to god couldn't tell if that was an artistic choice - the guitar players used those mooer preamp pedals (the 5150 model) for a long time, and it did not sound great live
They sounded better when they had the guys playing Engls, but I think they've had a revolving door of guitar players.

I think you're thinking of Cradle of Filth, DB has been Silenoz and Damage the last couple years, and Silenoz and Galder from like 2000 until then

CoF has indeed had a million guitarists though

Maybe, but i do know DB were Engl for a long time.

Yes, they were, then silenoz got his signature amp the mlc

But they've done a whole bunch of wildly different setups and rigs live the past few years - I don't know if it's because of the travel/cartage or what

That record has some of the best melodies i've ever heard recorded by any band of any genre - and it literally kick-started the whole gothic neo-romanticism thing in black metal so it was so groundbreaking it created/developed a genre of its own

There's a ton of black metal bands with huge, lush sounding production jobs on their records though

Ondskapt and Watain both sound massive and heavy with big modern guitars like everyone jacks off over on RT

DMDS, Glorior Belli, DsO, and the aforementioned Celestia sound like they were recorded in a fucking cathedral, I know DSO used a bricasti for those massive detailed reverb sounds, which, i'm sorry, if your records require a 40 thousand dollar reverb unit you don't get to call it "lofi"

I think it's just because people that don't know the genre associate the meme as reality honestly, because I cannot for the life of me imagine someone who's heard a lot of black metal not understanding
People have their preconceived notions that they can’t get past. That, and the vocals are surely off putting to most.
Which is a shame, because beneath them lies some of the most melodically complex, beautiful and atmospheric music in all of metal. I fucking love BM and some of the vocals are ridiculous even for me. 😂

Great examples of stellar BM recordings and totally agree on them.
Some of my favorites are Bergtatt, it’s atmosphere instantly takes me to the frigid woods of Norway, a winter favorite of mine…Thorns ST has such a cold, slicing and inhuman mood to it, perfect production for the material.
Satyricon’s Dark Medieval Times and Shadowthrone are also killers. Perfect combo of analog warmth and Norwegian frigidity…I love all early Burzum, but Filosofem is my standout. It’s shrouded in despair with that ever present, menacing fuzz weighing it down. Sooo fuckin effective…Emperor’s IX, as brutal as it is beautiful…
Blut Aus Nord’s TWWTGG may be the most spectral sounding album that I’ve ever heard, fucking brilliant…
Also, Xathur and Drudkh are some of the best in the game. Their recordings couldn’t possibly compliment the material any better.

Filosofem has such a vibe and texture, everything about it

Bergtatt is another example of a really lush sounding production too

The work which transforms god is an incredible album but is probably too avant garde for an average RTer to get into lol

My buddy went to the Fillmore/MNPLS show the other night....He said Hulder crushed....Liked them better than Dimmu. Too bad Hypocrisy wasn't there.
Hulder did crush and had better sound than DM. Their more raw and barbaric style of BM translated much better despite the shitty sound. Their guitars and drums had a drier, more organic tone.
Honorable mention for Marliese, that chick fucking kills.

Saw them last night in Denver, fucking killed it. Such a bummer, saw someone else say that about the show you went to. Last night they were so dialed though. I was real impressed with the drummer playing barkers parts… Kings of the carnival creation was totally nuts and spot on. The toms were fucking huge but not all triggered.
Damn, must’ve been a Vic theater or house soundman problem then. Bummer, that place has killer sound 90% of the time ime.
Barker’s a beast and that guy was definitely doing him justice. As far as I could tell anyway. 😂

That’s a top 10 BM album for me, absolutely otherworldly.

I have to be in the right mood for it nowadays - I made the mistake of putting that album on for the first time on mushrooms and it scarred my psyche a little bit

I literally felt like I had died and my soul was getting thrown through the cosmos on it's way to hell

Shit was the literal last album i should have been listening to
That’s the exact experience I’d expect. Lol
My last shroom trip I dove into Anekdoten and Zeppelin.
