Yeah I don't like using a lot of gain all the time, I like to play through a amp sometimes thats not very forgiving with mistake.
It keeps me on my toes.
Here's a little clip of my '68 Major.

Neil Geraldo does not get a lot of mention around here, but the guy is a great player and plays with very little gain.

Another one who does not get enough credit for some memorable stuff!

I've been playing lead on and off in country/rock bands since '89. I didn't even discover the compressor for "maximum squish" Paisley tone until a couple of years ago. So I had to make do with my chops, getting no help from the amp while playing country. It was always great hitting the third set, putting-down the strat, picking-up the LP and switching over to the amp's OD channel to have some help in shredding more rock as the night wore-on.

Anyways... I've been gigging my own solo "flamenco-jazz" stuff on nylon string acoustics for the past year+, so right now I'm having to shred with an even cleaner tone! S'all my fingers and a guitar that doesn't help much!

How about some clean, twanging country shred? Scotty Anderson is a freak of nature.

That's exactly what I was talking about there Michael R/T, some real fine playing too bud!! Wagster, my first reaction to that video was "yeah, I can't do that"... haha Been jamming without the boost now since I started this thread... thanks for all the replies guys, VERY cool!! :) Progress is slow but I can tell it's making me better, the notes sound a lot more pure and my hands feel tired after the first hour... I usually can go 4 or 5 before they start feeling sluggish... gotta work 'em into shape!! :) I'll get there... Running through "Eruption" earlier a couple times rendered itself to be far less painful than it was the other day, (why I always go for that one I have no idea... must be because it gives me an excuse to use my Phase 90... :p ) Just gotta stay at it... Just lake boiling water... You never get it right the first time........... . ... .... .. Right?? ......................... :scared:

Thanks for checking out the clip & the kind words.
I think your defiantly on the right track, it's the next step for most in becoming a more efficient guitarist no matter what amp you play through (old Fenders, vintage Marshalls etc....) you also develop a much larger and open sounding guitar tone this way.
Think of SRV's tone.

some great video examples here.

i always thought that about PG that he used a lot less distortion (even in the early days) than people think.

While this isn't really shred, Eric McCusker used quite a very clean sound with only a little bit of grit for his solo on Come said the Boy. It still sings & sustains though. One of my favourite solos too.

Cool old tune I had not heard. So many great ones out there.

I always liked Plant's solo album guitar player. Big Log has the coolest clean scooped tone running thru it. Robbie Blunt and his Strat into a MKII sounded glorious.

Yes I do except there are lots of long notes at phrase endings and pauses, and I am not playing scales much

more shapes and wider intervals, so I don't think it's really shred other than the sometimes speed, sheets of sound thing.

One of my Tones is very close to the Intro "Watchtower" Hendrix Tone , semi-clean singing tone.

I'm trying to not have it be angry sounding in tone or feel and there's a lot of R&B influence and the leads are not way out front in the Mix, and there's Rhythm Guitar....kind of out of the Steely Dan thing but more Rhythm and Funk, except I'm
not a musical Genius like Becker/Fagen lol.

I'd say Richie Kotzen tone is semi-distorted, definetly not a lot of gain. And those legato passages are effortless for him!

Gain doesn't mean shred-able, it's technique. For me, gain just gives me more sustain.
I can 'shred' on an acoustic if the action is good...just a well as on an electric guitar.
If you can't, it shows a limit to your abilities and technique and you should work on it. It's mostly the picking hand.

I take it you haven't listened to the Winery Dogs CD then?

Ton's of gain there. Vintage high gain.

It's all about technique. Lots of practice is required, but in the end some guys have it and some guys don't. I do not.

I've always found the hardest amps to play were set up for a good crunch. Even clean amps tend to easier to play.

I was looking into a 76 JMP that was for sale locally some time ago and stumbled across this clip....

Not sure who he is, but I was rather impressed with his technique. Strat into a jmp and it sings. I'd sound like shit.

Nothing will bring you back to earth like low gain and no FX.

Govan is a freak of nature. I saw the Aristocrats earlier this year and checked out his rig after the show. A Badger amp setup for light clean/light crunch with a Koko Boost for his leads. He was doing all his Govan tricks with just that. Dude just has great fretboard finger strength and timing and incredible left/right hand coordination.
