Anybody still into Engl amps?

I've only heard the Herbert and SE through clips, but I've had the opportunity to try out the Fireball 100 and Invader 150. I've been impressed by Herbert clips, but there's just something to it that doesn't click with me. It could all change when I finally play one though.

I never played or owned a SE. I have owned a Fireball 100 and an Invader 150. Currently have a Herbert. It sounds WAAAAAAAAAAY better in person then the clips.
I didnt care for the Fireball 100. It was ok but got tiring after a few weeks.
The Invader 150 is an AWESOME AMP!!!

I regret selling mine!

I would murder a man for an Engl SE, but I'd settle for an Engl Fireball 100. The SE is my current dream amplifier, but of course that changes every week.

You ever try a Diezel Herbert??? That is the absolute best hig gainer I've tried and I've owned/played lots of them. Still the Engl stuff costs less and is a blast to play through.

Tell you what Jim,
If I ever get a Chance to get another Invader 150 for a decent price.....I am going to snag it.
That was one of my all time Favorite amps!!!

Dont know much about the Invader 100's though. But that 150 was a GREAT Sounding amp all around!!

I approve of this statment. Really good amp. Still have it, still use it. Covers a lot of ground and midi controlable.

Dude you remember Phil and DEAN BCR aka Shawn??? I went down to that first ampfest in Culpepper with my 5150II half stack. Thought my amp was pretty good. Heard Phils Powerball and I knew right away that the 5150 was gonna be sold. For the ultra high gain stuff the Engl amps are sweet. The Diezel Herbert is prolly the end-all-be-all, but for a decent price the Engl stuff is pretty sweet. I'm on a Jeff Loomis kick so the Engl stuff is on my radar.

I would own, and only do own, two pieces of Engl Gear: The Savage 120 and the Pro 4x12 cabinet with v30s. They are a perfect match.

I mentioned it in another thread, but none of Nevermore's albums were recorded with Engl amplifiers:

Dead Heart in a Dead World was a Mesa Dual Racktifier into a Marshall 1960 cabinet loaded with T75s, quad tracked.

Enemies of Reality was a Mesa Triple Rectifier into a Mesa Rectifier 4x12, quad tracked.

This Godless Endeavor was a Mesa Dual Racktifier into a Mesa Rectifier cabinet, and a Krank Rev1 into a Mesa Rectifier cabinet, quad tracked.

The Obsidian Conspiracy was a Peavey 6505 (5150) into a Mesa Rectifier cabinet, quad tracked.

All of my information is straight from Andy Sneap (who engineered everything aside from Enemies of Reality, and ended up mixing all four albums).

I'll mention it again and again, people who don't love 5150s and Rectifiers for modern metal have no idea how to dial them in, don't boost them, and don't know what cabinet to pair them with.

FWIW, I like channel 1,2 and 4. Don't like 3. My friend Corey (Killzone from HCAF) loves ch 3. The difference being I use EMG's and he uses passive Pick ups. Mine needs fucking tubes and I'm broke after ordering the Peters. Couple weeks I will get 6 more (FUCK!)

yup! still got my powerball and it's not going anywhere. it's not the most versatile amp in the world, but for metal/shred i think it's an awesome amp. Heck, the clean channel is pretty good too! My only issue with it is the crunch channel blows and the fact that the noise gate is on the rear of the amp

All I know is I had a 5150 II and when I played the Engl Powerball the 5150 seemed inferior to me in pretty much everyway. Sold the Peavey and bought a Powerball. Kicking myself for selling the PB years ago.

There is a reason why most people endorse certain amps... money.

On that note, he does use a Savage 120 live now AFAIK, but Andy Sneap knows best and chose the Peavey because it sounded the most appropriate for Jeff's playing and the vibe of the album.

Yeah...I really miss that Invader 150.
I had a Savage as well...but it didnt stick around long. It was when I was into flipping amps pretty heavy.

Hard to say i guess. I also owned a powerball V2 and it was ok but thought the Invader was more my taste. To me ch3 sounds like a powerball so, maybe you would like it. You would need to try it for sure.

Jeff uses the Powerball on his instructional dvd. I've seen him use the SE alot to. On his clinics he's been using just about every model of Engl out there but yeah he is using the Savage 120 here

See.........I didnt care for channel 3 at all on the Invader. I used only Channel 2 and 4.
3 sounded....weird to me.
Cross between Metal and rock? But Channel 2 was so damn sweet for metal and rock....just a slight roll of the gain and it was perfect for either.

The cool thing about the Invader is that all 4 channels sound different, as in 4 amps in one. Mailman is correct about channel 2, killer classic tones but can almost do modern metal.
