Anybody use a Univox Super Fuzz and/or clone?

If so, I'd really appreciate your opinion on this. I am deciding between a BYOC Leeds Fuzz (Super Fuzz copy) and the Malekko Fuzz (You guessed it). Do you think the BYOC is a close copy to the original tone? I've seen youtube demos of the original and I was wowed, then upon hearing some vids of the BYOC Leeds I jut didn't hear the same texture. I think that the Malekko sounded great even before I found out about the Super Fuzz and how much I loved it, so I think it's a fair bet either way. What is your input?

My buddy has an original univox Super fuzz. I was shocked to see how much these things sell for when I looked it up. Trying his, I wasn't that impressed, but its been a few years and I wasn't much into fuzz at the time. The bypass on the originals is horrible (not surprising).

I would go with the Malekko over the BYOC, that way you can sell it easily if you don't like it.

That was the first pedal I ever had. Got it in 75 or 76?? It was Orange crinkle and Blue. Loved that pedal. Unfortunately is was ripped off..... :codeak:

I can say it had two modes, only really used the one that had the most cut, the other was too muffled sounding.

Listen to this. Jack Bla... I mean Gearmanndude demos the pedal :D

So anybody have any feedback on the Leeds fuzz? I'm about a week away from buying, but one thing that I worry about is that the clips that I have heard don't really have the same texture as the older vintage units. I know BYOC makes good stuff, their pedal demo's usually impress me a lot, especially for the price, but I have yet to be wowed by any demo I've heard of the Leeds Fuzz. Anyone have any firsthand experience with a Leeds fuzz, preferably also experience with an original Superfuzz unit as well?

Go for it. I havent tried it yet but Ive built alot of BYOC pedals and they all have gone above my expectations. Id feel confident that it will probably sound great too. Plus theyre a blast to build.

On the other hand Im a big Malekko fan too soo....

Last call. Nobody has used one?
I built the leeds from byoc. It's a great pedal, it's not for everything of course but it's tons of fun when the time is right. Killer quality as all of the byoc stuff, can't really go wrong if you want that kind of monster of a fuzz. Be warned that it's a pretty high parts count for a fuzz and it's not quite a breeze to build but if you follow the instructions you should be fine. Anything specific you want to know just shout.

I'll tell ya what, give me just a bit to finish burning in this old kitty hawk amp that I just got done repairing for a customer so I can make sure she won't try to commit suicide in front of him again and I'll hook my leeds fuzz up to a real amp and compare to Jack Blacks cousin's vid. I'll let ya know how it goes.

Ok, after a quick 5 or 10 minute jam with my byoc leeds I can say that it is pretty close to the JB ;) demo. Mine is a little different in some ways but it is in the ballpark for sure. It does that angry, almost gated pissed off monster of a fuzz thing with a bit of octave thrown in very well. There's a trimmer inside the pedal that you can fine tune the transistors with, there's a lot of no man's land at either end and a sweet spot in the middle of the rotation that you can tune to your preference. I dig mine, I can't guarantee that you'll love it but it certainly doesn't suck, worth the $$$ imo.

Thanks! That's pretty reassuring actually. I had a hunch that the difference was due to the trimpot, but I couldn't be sure. I guess nobody knew what the trimpot does because 'no man's land' pretty much sums up how their videos sounded :gethim: I guess I'll have to grab one and make it an ongoing build project that I'll build each day a little bit in between classes. Thanks for the review!

This is what my friend's superfuzz looks like. Its a later orange and blue one from probably about the mid 70's. Part of what threw me off at the time was the horrible bypass and I just wasn't into fuzz at that time, other than a big muff. I mean it was kind of cool, but when I saw them going for $350, I just didn't get it. I get it now that I found out that Townsend used one.
