Anyone else think Norum sounds better with strats?

For the most part, it would appear as if the active pickups and the Les Pauls have taken a back seat to passive humbuckers and his classic strat / single coil signature sound. Even better is that it brings his pick attack and vibrato out more. He just plain plays different on single coils.

 
I agree, although his Shrapnel Solo album and the Don Dokken stuff was killer with a humbucker equipped strat.
 
Yep - agree.
Same with Aldrich - his Lion tone was cool, but his stuff with BMR and his solo/instructional stuff on the strats was a tone very similar to what you posted in the videos.
Are those FS-1's?
 
NO! I saw him last week and I was 3rd row right in front of him, he sounded awesome with all his guitars except his signature Paoletti strat which sounded WAY too dark. His LP's don't have active pickups anymore.
His playing and tone was killer.

Here is his pedal board, my buddy was tech-ing - the Cornish pedal is worth nearly $1000!

Norum didn't I promise you.
 
From what I saw today on his gear page, FS-1's are the go to in most of his strats with the exception of one or two of them with quarter pounders or stock Fender neck pups.

I also dig the way he more or less keeps things basic with your run of the mill BOSS CE-2, MXR script logo, the foxtron and a boost or two. (the exception being that 1000$ pedal of course :confused:

Funny, I was listening to Up From the Ashes Sunday after years, and thought, "Lynch never sounded this good, and Lynch is not the player Norum is". Now, I've been a Lynch fanboy for years, but I've become a huge Norum fan as well, over the past 2-3 years. I have all of his solo albums. Norum is a beast.

His tone, whether Strat, or LP, is consistently some of the best tones I've ever heard. Here's his rundown. Great list of amps, but his core tone is that 1987 2205 that belonged to Michael Schenker:

Norum just got is original Arvidson strat back. I actually sent it to him a few months ago, he gave it to Mark C. many years ago as a gift.
 
I loved Marcello's solo on "Towers Calling" from that album. VERY cool.

Absolutely. Norum can honestly hang with George in the context of Dokken no problem.

I was standing right in front of Norum when they played Toads (very small club).. waiting for John to rip my face off when the solo came up.. imagine my shock when Billy took the majority of the solos that night lol. :lol: :LOL: :doh: :cry: :confused: :rock: :no:
They were a helluva team.. that lineup was ridiculous on every instrument.. Mikkey Dee, Peter Baltes, & a guitar team from hell. The production on that disc is great as well.

Couldn't agree more ! That disc is a benchmark production for that period, love that stuff. Too bad it was fronted by Donna Dokken.
 
I was lucky enough to see Dokken back in the day with Norum (and as mentioned above Billy White who was really good as well). I've been a fan for years and he really sounds good no matter what he's playing. The Les Paul on "Play yard blues" is amazing but so are his early strat sounds. Norum is a cool singer as well. Love all of his Thin Lizzy covers, he really knows how to capture that vibe.
 
Doesn't get any better than this. Two of my faves and there is no doubt where a lot of Norum's influence and vibrato comes from when he rips into the pentatonics.



I mean come on.. he totally has the Schenker feel and vibe !
