Over the years, I've used all sorts of rigs...tons of pedals, multiple amps, rack gear, ect. But the last few years, I've come to prefer simply plugging my guitar into a single channel amp and just playing. I can get clean, crunch, and full-on shred without channel switching on my SLO and BFD modded JCM800. Anyone else prefer keeping it simple? And I'm not talking about "Satriani simple"....he claims it's simple, like Hendrix, if you ignore the 8 foot long pedal board. I'm talking 1 guitar, 1 cord, 1 channel, and as many speakers as the gig allows.

I run right into my Mesa . No effects right out into the 4x12's.
I do have a boost thats in front of the amp but its off most of the time.

Yes , I run guitar , tc polytune, bray Marshall mod, Marshall cab with blackbacks either 2x12 or 4x12. Sometimes use a holy grail reverb in the loop at most.

At home I do.

But at gigs I need much more, so I've got a bunch of delays, chorus, flanger, phaser, tremelo/vibe, and wah.

Just because SOME of us like having rigs w/ lots of options, doesn't mean everything has to always be "ON" all the time, or that THAT rig is the only rig we should/can choose from. But yes, I play w/ just a simple rig too. Sometimes just an acoustic guitar. ;)

my setup is guitar->pedal tuner->boost->decimator->amp->cab ... there is a couple pedals but not really anything to color the tone, and no effects

word up

went from a bunch of shit, to guitar/cord/amp

not sure if im going to use a chorus pedal in the loop and the wah out front, but, even if, way simpler than i used to run.

thats the only way i play

if i have any effects i always compare the effect tone to the off tone - i love transparency and volume matching, i dislike effects being overcontrolling of the main amplifier tone unless its a dramatic clean tone or a boosted lead tone for saturation.

The day i need the effects to play well is the day i downsize it all - nothing like a guitar -> amp > cabinet tone

Why would you not want a touch of verb and delay though? Everything sounds so much better. I like simple rigs but nothing wrong with a bit of flava' flave live. It is a show after all!

^ at band volumes it is actually detrumental to tone in my experience, at higher volumes the digital AD/DA buffers or the pedals are much more noticable, the amplifier sounds, feels, and responds better without any effects in the chain. I try to keep them off at all times, and if they are on, they are minimal and are not over-powering, that way when they are switched off they are done with their purpose and the original tone is not widely changing all of the time.

I have a Maxon 808 and a ISP Decimator before my Uberschalls, and that's it for rhythm.

I rarely like to play that way or even listen to players with those rigs. I like to use some delay, maybe reverb wah.

I play 75% of the time straight up - just as you describe. The remaining 25% is once I've got a song down, or the idea and framework down, and I want to flesh it out. But otherwise, the lack of FX for most of my playing is what's led me to love the amps I have - for being the amps they are. Straight up, pure tone - no additives.

Cool thread

Zachman....... Everyone here knows how big your rig is. Just sayin....

I use a bb pre and a Bogner combo right now. Had huge rack but spent more time twiddling than practicing and it showed at gigs. Effects are cool, but I have a strict limit now.

Wow Zachman, that's a MASSIVE rig. Don't get me wrong...I don't think there's anything wrong with a guy and a big rig. But it's not for me anymore. There's just something really sweet and refreshing about hearing the raw tone of an amp and the player. It's just different is all.

I totally get it, and w/ the press of a volume pedal I can eliminate the wet side of the rig entirely, which is the same as guitar straight to amp. I designed the rig specifically with that ability in mind, because I use that a LOT. The Big rig is ALL about options.

That said, I certainly don't advocate it, nor do I suggest it, nor do I use it-- for ALL occasions. It's a Big tool box. Certain jobs required specialized tools, while others are simple. BUT... To me, I ALWAYS like the sound and flexibility of the Big rig more. I figure I'd rather have more and NOT need it, than to NEED/WANT more-- and NOT have it.

Depends on the gig. I love all kinds of rigs.

I ain't hauling all this stuff up/down stairs to play in some little pub for $50, that is CERTAIN!
