So I need to build a “smoking guitar” and have heard for obvious knock offs, that structurally the stuff here is not terrible. Would need about $500 in upgrades putting it still at about 45% cheaper than used Epi’s.

Thoughts?

If your looking for an Ace Frehley Guitar. Look for A 70s early 80s Greco. They’ll be a much better investment and ready to go. Lots of 3 pickup ones out there. Can Google Greco EG600PR or Greco Ace Frehley.

About 1 out of 20 Chibsons end up being worth the trouble. You are rolling the dice if the guitar will even be playable. I agree with above, look Greco or a similar guitar.

Buddy of mine orders knockoffs from DHGate all the time to hang on his wall. Unless your ready to do some MAJOR setup work in addition to upgrades, it would be tough to justify prices by the time your done. Greco would be awesome but the current prices are totally insane.

Got a Lemmy RIC clone. Took 6 months to get it. Other than the cheap hardware and fret ends that would chew your fingers off,it looks kickass!! Bought it as a wall ornament for a Lemmy shrine. For $300 it was well worth it.

Dwisted Dave got a washy dime slime clone that is pretty kickass. Very light weight wood with painted binding. But you can't tell if its not in your hands(I have the real deal and would say they nailed the color pretty close to mine). I would buy one like his if I was in a tribute band for sure. He'll,I wanna buy one just to do the dripping slime clone I have wanted for years....

They also have a southern cross clone. Very tempting....

As long as you're okay with what you're getting for the money, they're fine. I could totally see getting one to hang on a wall, or as a prop. I don't think anyone would expect the nuts slots or fretwork or inlays to be perfect. Beyond that, if it was something I was going to play with any frequency, I'd swap in my preferred pickups and locking tuners, but I do that on almost any guitar I buy. If I was in a Kiss tribute band and wanted to mimic a Frehley guitar (with Gibson on the headstock) without spending several grand, I'd totally give it a whirl.

Problem is when you get it, and it looks cool enough. You can look past some fit and finish, but then you realize you cant get the guitar quite intonated. And over time you start having tuning issues. Soon enough you realize it's a cool looking (from afar) wall hanger. Now as a wall hanger art piece, nothing wrong with it. But I have rarely seen a Chibson that I would consider stage worthy, even with mods. People want to compare them to Epiphones..but just like any other country..not all guitars in China are made similar.

Yeah a 3 pup Greco can be had for a grand tops, and sometimes 6-800 and that’s with shipping. You won’t need to upgrade anything except maybe the Bridge pup and nut. By contrast you’ll have to upgrade everything in the Chibson, and in the end you’ll be close to the Greco anyway. The Greco will have resale plus play and sound damn good right out of the case.
No contest here
