Anyone have a cab that just doesn't like a specific amp?

For some reason my Orange 4x12 just doesn't like my Mark V. It's loaded with V30s and sounds fine with other amps (such as my Dual Recto), but when I plug the Mark V into it it just sounds like a muddy, cloudy mess. It's like it's peaking on all the wrong frequencies and failing to play to any of the Mark V's strengths.

I have a V30 loaded Recto 2x12 and it sounds fine... but it doesn't sound like a 4x12.

Most frustrating.
 
i have a rivera ported cab that only likes solid state rigs. its so strange. has to be the g12-75's in it....really thin and icepicky with tube amps..but sounds perfectly representable of solid state rigs i've played through it.

really weird.

It is a mystery for damn sure. All of my old Marks (IIC+, III, IV) sound great through a 412 Recto. The V did as well but I sold it. For a Mesa amp it is just hard to beat a Mesa Recto cab. Now, if I tried to use something like a VH4 with the Recto, it sounded like total ass, all flub and farty. The Orange 412 has a smaller internal volume than the Recto cab. It has something to due with the speaker/internal volume/resonant frequency that the cab is designed around. Also, wood, baffles, etc. have an impact. The Orange sits on the floor too. Maybe that has an affect. The Mark V has a lot of tonal territory which it covers. My advice to you would be to find you a used 412 Recto cab and put yourself out of misery. Or, get a new one.

Would love an old straight/slant cab. Used to have one but I sold it a few years back when I started listening to the internet instead of listening to my own ears....

I wonder why Mesa stopped making them?

I also wonder if the current slant cab sounds the same as those straight/slants?
 
Yes, for me it is the Uberschall with the Marshall1960av.. Though a Mills cab, or even a Mesa Thiele 1x12 with the 200w speaker, its a very different beast..
 
I have never figured out how very diff cabs can sound, with the same speakers. My remedy is to keep plenty of diff cabs with diff speaker selections around, so I just swap until I find a good mix, I have also figured out how well tuned same brand amps and cabs sound together, lots of r&d I guess. I came up with a Mesa vert 2x12 for my MKV, sounds great!
 
My cobra didn't seem to like my Orange cab......and my VHT UL didn't seem to like my V30 Marshall cab.

However, each LOVED their matching cabs.
 
Talked to Mesa and it seems they still make the straight/slant. It's a custom order with no upcharge.

Played my buddy's Mark IV through his Marshall cab with 75's. Sounded really dull and lifeless. Switched to his boogie traditional cab and wow...amazing.
 
This is true all over the place:

Hughes & Kettner Switchblade & Trilogy do not like V30's--love Jensen 60's, Eminence speakers, G12T-75s, G12S-50s.
Splawn Nitro & Quick Rod do not seem to like G12T-75s.
JCA100H sounds good through pretty much everything.
Pretty much everything sounds good through the Marshall 425A/B
 
For a short time I had a Dual Rectifier going through a Marshall cab loaded with G12T-75's. Sounded very weird. :bleh:
 
I have lot of cabs that don't like some amps. I have an excel table matrix that I show what cabs work with what amps. My Metal grill Mesa Halfback 412 works well with all my amps. My Fender Brown Super amp works well with all my cabs.
