Anyone have experience with a non-fine tuner Floyd?

I'm thinking of putting one on my Van Halen "bumblebee" replica to get it closer to how the real deal was when Ed was using it. How much of a pain in the ass is the lack of fine tuners? I know the Guthrie Govan signature Charvel uses one, so I'm guessing it must not be too terrible. Anyone familiar with using one? How did you like it?

I don't have on but i have a gotoh 510 floating bridge on my suhr modern. Same idea as the floyd and im guessing the floyd may be even more stable with the locking saddles. Mine stays in tune really great but im not doing the kerry king thing. I would probably just stick with the normal floyd if you have it.

I have the Fender style they used in the 90s. Without a locking nut, it's obviously fine. I use locking tuners and t stays in tune well, though Im always somewhat nervous a deep dive could knock a string from the nut. But with a locking nut, I'd think it'd be a real pain. I can never get a locking nut to actually prevent slippage without tightening it enough to knock the strings out of tune.

The GG guitar doesn't have a Floyd nut though - it has a regular non-locking nut, locking tuners and a non-fine tuner Floyd. That works fine and stays in tune. I have a guitar setup just like that and I love it. If your guitar will have a Floyd nut, ask yourself why they invented the fine tuners in the first place. A non-finue tuner Floyd will be a major pain in the ass with a Floyd locking nut...

I wouldn't do it unless the guitar has a regular, non-locking nut and locking tuners - then it works fine.

I had one years ago, it was tricky to work with if you use a locking nut. Having the string retainer behind the nut, and adjusted properly, was a must. If it isn't adjusted low enough, the strings will definitely go sharp when you clamp them. ...and any tuning requires unclamping obviously. If you are going to lock it at the nut, keep the fine tuners for your own sanity. ;-)

If you are planning on using your Floyd you guitar won't stay in tune without locking it I guarantee that.

I think I'll just shit-can that idea. Function is way more important to me than aesthetics.

Nah... If you use locking tuners you will be fine.

Absolutely. As I said, I have a guitar set up with locking tuners and a non-fine tuning Floyd and it stays in tune fine, as does the GG model Charvel...
