Ok so here goes.
I have
V1-GT 12AX7-R
V2-Tung Sol
V3-JJ
V4-JJ

A little less gain, but very clear. The highs are great. Not overly bright, but still percussive and Splawny... I'm liking... :D

Did you try the Ecc803 yet. They sound a lot better than the regular JJ's...but still suck vs. the C9 and Tungsol

LOL! :D
Yeah I just put it in V2. Left the Tung sol in V1 and the rest as JJ's.

It's fuzzier, gainier. Not bad. I'm going to try the TS in the V1. Then the GT in the V2. The rest JJ's next.

Ya I dig them.

What amp are you using them in?

ALL

I'm specifically looking to put in my Splawn. Wonder how they compare to JJ's.

Personally, never liked JJs... I loaded the preamp of my 5150 with the Tung Sols... dig it. To my ear, sounds boosted or something. Takes away from that signature 5150 sound, but not in a bad way. At least to me.

I like the Tung Sol in one of my amps and not so much in the other. Overall, I do find it a brighter, glassier sounding tube. Compared to all JJ's or chinese 9th generations In my HG Jose it opens up the high end in a nice musical way and the amp seems more dynamic. On the other hand, in my Uberschall the bass seems off, the high end is a little splattery, and it sounds a less focused then the chinese. Just depends on the amp and what you want from it.

Yup... Same here...
I hate JJ's, even in supposedly bright amps. Yet, in the QR, they sound really good. I just can't get passed the fact they're JJ's! LOL! :D

Shreder75, Psychodave and myself tried like 5-6 different preamp tubes from Tungsram, NOS Mullards to JJ's and 9th Gen's.
If I remember correctly... the Tungsram and the JJ sounded the best.
I really like JJ's! :D

All my amps have either JJ's or Sovtek 12ax7wc's in them.

Really? Man... I hate both those tubes... They make the amp sound like it's got a sinus infection... LOL! :D
But hey... I can't argue with the tone I've heard you get...
All of my amps (but one) are EL84 amps, so they aren't hurting for high end. Depends on the amp you use for sure!

Yeah I guess Scott Splawn really voiced the amp around the JJs or something. Those seem to sound the best in that amp...

A Tung Sol 12ax7 in V1 of my XTC (a dark amp) made it a little brighter, tighter and stiffer in response...all pluses as far as I'm concerned...didn't care for it in the SLO, as it is already bright and glassy... I used to have use a JJ tube there - (attenuated the highs nice - smoothed out some midrange).

I really like the TS and chinese stuff. The JJ's are at the bottom of my list, dull and grainy.
