I think that's the only string that never sounds good, muted or otherwise. Anyone else agree?

Are these guitars you've set up yourself? Sounds like you might have a bigger radius to the bridge vs the fretboard itself. So when you set the outer "E" strings they'll be alright but the center strings much lower. That's just the only thing I could think of universally that might cause that.
