I own one, and there seems to be quite a lot of low frequency hum when both gains on the lead channel are up about 75% and nothing is plugged in to the amp. The amp was retubed today with fresh tubes. Is this normal in these amps? It sounds great, but the hum is pretty powerful.

Thanks,

-Greg :)

With just about any high gain amp, if the gain it as 75%, you're going to hear hum, even with no guitar plugged in. Most likely, it is noise being generated by how high the gain is on the amp. The Savage's that I have played one haven't been the quietest amps in town.

A good friend of mine has one and his does not do that. Maybe it is bad filtering? :dunno:

Yeah, I'm aware I'm going to hear a pretty decent amount of hum. I'm talking significantly louder than a 5150s noise floor, which is pretty loud.

What would cause a filtering problem?

I dont, but someone needs to let me borrow one, I REALLY want to try one out :D

Minus the noise, it is the second best amp I've played (the first being my Baron K2).

I haven't played an ENGL yet that I've liked, but haven't played one of these, and Gary (Holt) keeps raving about them, so I thought I'd try it out, so I could at least know what all the hype is about :) Just not willing to give up my Titan to try one. ;)

The Savage is the only amp that I've ever heard hyped up and it lived past my expectations.

This hum is killing me though. I don't know how to diagnose it.

I had a Savage, sounded great but it hummed as well. The Savage and the Fireball had the same hum when gain was up high...probably because there is so much gain.
