I've been playing drums for a bit over 10 years now, the biggest thing it's done for me is change the way I approach rhythms while working on stuff. Definitely spend some time routinely on rudiments, it pays dividends quickly. Listen to huge varieties of music once you get into it, even listening to songs you love is like a new experience.

I started programming drums in the late 80's because our drummer was a pussy.
Made me a better guitarist for sure.
