Anyone tried a Jackson J80 pickup?

Long story short, I have an 80s RR1 that had what I thought was active Jackson pickups. They never sounded good so I decided to swap them a few years back. today I decided to mess with my mahogany JJ1 and replace the JB pickup in the bridge. Since I had the J80s I popped one in. They are not active, turns out the RR1 had an output booster (that sucked).

The J80 is a far different than the JB. I get this kinda hot rodded single coil sound that actually rocks really hard under high gain. It actually reminds me of shredder tones from the 80s a lot. Riffing has meaty low mids and soloing has that amazing floaty buttery quality. Anyways I still have another J80 from the neck position.

So Im not sure I want to keep these J80 pickups. Are they worth anything?

Only Jackson pickup I know of that's worth anything are J95s because they are pretty rare. I pretty much hate Jackson pickups, J50s are really bad IMHO. J95s kick ass though.

Hmm, ok probably not worth anything eh. I can live with that, none of my stuff is worth much. It is kinda rare though, I can't find much of anything on the internet about it.

Like any pickup, it really depends on the guitar (sum of the parts....you know the story). I never cared for any of the Jackson pickups, although the J50 is probably the most traditional sounding model (and works well with a clean boost or onboard preamp like the J-2000)...I have one is my current Soloist ('87) and it works well/sounds great. The J80/J90/J95 never "did it" for me and I always replaced them, although I've heard others use them to get some pretty happening tones.

depends.

j80 or j80c?

The J90C and J80C are both fucking killer.

Don't be convinced otherwise.

According to Chubtone, the J80 is the pickup of choice for Joe Holmes.

^^^^^^^ See...now that's what I thought but wasn't sure. Good to know.

I guess tone is indeed in the ear of the beholder... I have a PILE of jackson pickups I replaced around here somewhere, should be several J80 and 50s in there. I'd be glad to help some of you reach tonal nirvana for cash once I find them. :)

I think I have some J-80's lying around. I was not that impressed. They were middle of the road

Joe Holmes does in fact use the J-80 (not the J-80C) and due to this endorsement by a former Ozzy guitarist the Jackson J-80's regularly reach lofty prices between $10-20 on ebay. Seriously. I have a J-80 in one of my guitars and it's OK. It's like a slightly underwound Duncan Custom 5.

It's not that special, but Joe Holmes had about the sickest tone I ever heard so I wouldn't throw them in the trash just yet.

Haha. I played it for a few hours today and its pretty bad. Not diggin it for distorted tones but for clean it does sound very good. $10-20 bux eh lol!
