The coil tapped tones sound useful...like P90's. There's also phase switch and direct to input jack for the tone knobs' push/pull pots.

Careful Zack. The Standard, from 2007 onward has been chambered to the point of being a hollow body guitar.

Hey Steve. Yeah I'm aware that there has been chambering - I have an '08 Standard that's chambered...I like that it's lighter...sounds great though. The 2012 insides are different - what they call 'modern weight relief'...basically looks like spokes...I used to have a bad shoulder/neck problems because of heavy guitars...to me if they sound great, I don't care what the insides look like.

Zack's current LP sounds great imo, I think it's chambered.

I doubt it...those things are heavy and the necks are friggin huge!!

The new standards are NOT chambered, they are like this. They have a new weight relif on the new 2012's

Yes I played the new 2012 Standards. I thought it was really nice. They have a new neck asymmetrical neck profile that isn't super thin like the 60's necks. It is a comfy medium between the 50's and 60's necks. I love fat necks and love the 50's profile and pass over anything 60's so I was surprised how the new profiles felt. The other cool thing is the compound radius necks. They have beautiful AAA tops and the one I played had no issues whatsoever. The push pull pots ans switching is cool. I like the ability to bypass tone/volume ans send the output directly to the output jack. The pots are on a PCB so that may not be well liked buy the purists but hey...its technology advances ;)

Keep in mind Gibson still have the 2008 model Standards with 2012 made dates that are being made so don't confuse them with the 2012 models. They also have the Traditional Plus and Pro Standards to confuse you even more. I have the 2012 Traditional Plus...it has 50's neck and old school swiss cheese weight relief and weighs in over 9 lbs.

What?! Mine ain't heavy by any stretch. Maybe 8 lbs...Yes the neck is on the thicker side, but I have long fingers and cramp out on thin necks. Plus, thick necks sound better, IMO. Maybe you're thinking of a different guitar...the 08's are pretty lightweight.

As long as you know what you are getting (or aren't getting) and are happy with it. For years, Gibson was about wood selection and solid bodies for sustain and resonance. Now, they are about using cheaper cuts of wood and special weight relieving grooves for the same sustain and resonance. I think I sold mine for $500 to Kurt, by the way.

I think it was 2009 or 2010 and I am thinking it was a Standard "Professional". Can't be positive though. They started putting out the Classic, which wasn't supposed to be weight relieved and there were supposedly a couple of models (Slash) and and another one that didn't get it. If it doesn't matter to you, then its all good. It just pissed me off. But, I cannot just pop into a store and play one here, so ordering online from the Music Zoo, I was expecting something, but didn't get it. Which, I guess was my bad. However, Gibson wasn't forthcoming with info at the time.

Oh, and the control cavity is all PCB now. No more hardwire to the pots, switch, jack. Everything is traces and plugs. Guess they can make this stuff in China for cheaper, ship over and assemble here. If you ever come across that guitar, it will have a lot of solder burns on the back. I used it as a pick up test bed and soldering iron rest! It was the end game of my frustrations - that 6lb balsa wood piece of shit....

I guess the moral of the story is to "try before you buy".
