If you have a JB in a guitar that is too bright, or if you just don't like the brightness of the JB and are using 500k pots try this mod. Put a 1M resistor across the outside lugs of the pot and your pot is now a 333k pot. If you think that's too dark/spongy try a 2M resistor and you have a 400k pot. You could even try a 4.5M resistor to make it 450k, but I'm not so sure that would do much. I am using 333k and I love how much more focused the mids sound! Tried 250k and it was a little much, but 333k is a good compromise.

JB's are great...a good middle of the road, meat and potatoes, double coil. If your guitar sounds good, a JB will sound good in it.

The JB has been my favorite pickup a very long time. Lot's of cool pickup's ... but I always go back to this.

Excellent reporting! I have not had a chance to do any of the mod experiments we had been talking about along these lines, but I will play with these soon.
 
I have a JB in my Horizon and love it,sounds perfect.
And I have one in my Charvel and I think it sounds
like shit,I moved it up and down,changed pots,still
think it sounds bad,sounds ok for leads though.
Maybe it's the wood.

Interesting, do other pickups sound comparably thin in that guitar as well? Could be a bad pickup?

That would be cool if you had a 5M pot instead of a 1M pot because most of the operative values are above 1M. I actually recommend to people to use the soldering method though because of my personal experience with this mod. At first I wasn't a fan of the mod because the pickup feel was so much drastically different than the stock version. The instant gratification wasn't really there and I was going to try a higher pot value that was closer to stock, but over time it has become my favorite pickup to play and I love the sound. Much, much better than the stock version, at least for my guitar. I'm rambling, but what I'm trying to say is that your ears will mislead you into thinking that 'different' is bad, or good, depending on what's between them. :thumbsup:
 
I've had luck with simply lowering my JB's height in my LP.
Lowers the brightness and output just enough.
 
I like the sound of it in my mahogany ibanez prestige, but it sounds a little dull in a mahogany fernandes that I have.

My favorite sounding guitar is a late 80's Ibby USA custom that is alder and has a dimarzio distortion. It is the perfect blend of mids and body, but not as hot as modern pickups, so it rolls off wonderfully.
 
I love the JB in a Les Paul and a Charvel, maybe the speakers I use or something but I find it to be just right.
