Anyone using open back cabs??

I know this board is mostly hard rock and metal based guys but is anyone using an open back 2x12 or 1x12 for their sounds?? I find I like the speaker layout for some partially open back cabs and the weight for sure is lighter...in the orange cabs the partially open back 2x12 is almost 30lbs lighter than the PPC 2x12...thoughts...

I am about 50/50 as far as cabs that are opened back and ones that are closed back. In general I like opened back cabs for simpler vintage single channel amps and closed back for more modern amps.

I bought a early 60s bandmaster 212 for my '69 fender bandmaster reverb. The cab stock was closed back and had already been recovered. I made two new back panels and made it opened back. Once I did that, the fender clean from the bmr really came to life. To me fender amps just sound best through opened backed cabs or combos.

I use four 1x12 cabs....2 are closed and 2 are open. Amps are JCA 22h and an EVH 5150iii .... sounds huge

I have an open back 1x12 that I stack on top of a closed back 1x12. It's not as full or thumpy as a closed back 2x12, but the open back cab does a better job of spreading the sound around the room.

Well I ordered the Orange 2x12 open back, which is partially open. because its a little smaller than the PPC 2x12 and it only weighs 44 lbs which is better for my old back, Gonna use it with my 5153 mini, I hope its still kinda tight and defined and bassy enuff but well see, got a great deal from sweetwater on it, should be here wed, if not gonna grab a couple more 1x12s....

I played through a Mesa/Boogie 3/4 backed 4x12 a while ago. It was a bit smaller than a typical 4x12 and much lighter. It had a big sound; really filled the room. Sounded great except trying to use the low B string (7-string player), where it just couldn't handle that low end well.

There are some videos on youtube showing open back vs closed back vs partial open back and I like the partial open back the most but I could see how a low B string would flub out....

I have a 3/4 back, ported wide-body Mesa cab with a C90 and it sounds great. I pair it with a Mesa/Boogie DC-5 wide-body combo (also about 3/4 open). In a vertical 2x12 on this little rig it sounds as big as a closed back 4x12

i'm playing a dsl 40c. the combo is semi open back. after a couple of gigs i found i was lacking in bottom end. i found a blackstar htv 1x12 that also had a seventy80 in it. the htv was open back.. but the speaker is mounted at the bottom of the soundboard instead of in the middle. that helped a lot.. especially in larger clubs or in clubs where the throw is long.

I used to use a dual 2x12 open/closed stack. Closed 2x12 on the bottom, open 2x12 on top.
Great setup. Best of both worlds for my tastes.
Closed back has better control of the bass frequencies but can be very directional.
The open back compliments this nicely with a bigger 3D projection and more lively sound overall.
Actually I'm going back to this setup soon as I just recently ordered another 2x12 open back cab to put on top of my Port City 2x12 OS.

Open for more vintage slower rhythm stuff, closed if you want to push live on arrival. Want to try the Forte SV model...
