...Just checking. Looking at these for my EVH 5153. Been reading good things about them.

I have GC-STRs in all my 5150 right now. At first I was thrilled by their bass, lately I feel the Rubys more warmer and musical on the open chords.
TAD work great in the Slo 100 if you're looking for palm muting riffs.
Fully worth the money anyway.

Hmmm...I mostly play hard rock ala GNR, COC, Zep, STP, etc. So, not a lot of chugga chugga, but some. Plus, with the resonance knob on the back AND my speakers, I get get a lot of bass if I want, but don't necessarily think I need too much from the tube itself.

Something I do want is mids, since the EVH doesn't quite have the kerrang of a Marshall. Thoughts?

Sounds like you would like the smaller bottle wgc's, which are more vintage sounding.

I'm using the 6L6GC-STR's in my 100w 5153 and I love them. They sound massive. Tons of low end and sparkly highs. They are maybe slightly scooped sounding though, so if you're looking for a tube that emphasizes the mids, it might not be the right one for you. I play mostly metal though and they are really full sounding.

I ran the GC's in my SLO for a bit, they replaced some dead Winged C's. I think they're a pretty decent susbstitute for the now overpriced/hard to find C's. ...but risking a good flaming, I put a set of Sovtek 5881s in it last weekend and I think I like those better. The TADs may be a bit worn out though so it's possible it's not a fair comparison. ?

I'd rather go with the TAD WGC. However, they do not stay very long on the clean side.
Personally I thing the Sovtek WXT work great in the 5153 for a classic rock tone.

I have actually heard great things about the sovtek 5881. Never tried them, but they seem to be a crown jewel in the Sovtek power tube lineup

I used the short bottle TAD 6L6's in my old Mesa Single Rec when I had it....sounded great....Liked it more than with JJ's....and I do like JJ 6L6's...their best tube in my opinion.

Love the TAD, got them in my Randall RM amps, made them sound much warner and better clarity. Thinking of trying them out on my 5153 III as well

Ah! This is great, guys, thanks for chiming in! Hard to decide... So I'm hearing good things about the following...

TAD WGC (short bottle)
TAD GC (tall bottle)
Sovtek WXT+
Sovtek 5881
Ruby GC-MSTR

Decisions, decisions...I don't have my own MV reader and won't bias it myself, so I can only get one pair at this time.

I just want good clarity, definition, fullness, and as much possible ROAR/KERRANG out of the 5153. Which tube does that best?? Ha!

I want to know the same thing, like to try the tall bottle TAD 6L6s on my 5153 as well.
If you get them in, let us know what you think.

Sovtek 5881 are what Soldano recommend for the SLO, so no flaming warranted, IMHO. I use TAD 6L6's in my Bassman, and I like them a lot. Nice and crunchy.
