First off let me just say that I never liked attenuators, and pretty much gave up on them after testing many.
Last year I was tipped off by a local Gear Page forum member/friend about another forum member who was building some awesome attenuators (and now sells them there as the "Alex")
I really trusted his ear, so I gave Alex a call and had him build me one.
I thought the Alex sounded very good......better than any other I've tested.
It was almost a keeper, but was still lacking in feel & transparency.
I sold it after a few week and thought this time I have given up on attenuators for good.
During the past year I was sucked into reading about two particular attenuators here on TGP.......the Phantom & Aracom.
Being these were pretty fresh on the market, I knew it be almost impossible to pick one up used to give it a whirl.
At first, the thought of laying out that kind of money for a product I had no luck with in the past seemed out of the question.
As time went on, I just could not dismiss the thought of giving one of these a shot.
So, during a weak moment , I broke down and ordered the Aracom after reading many posts to decide between it & the Phantom.
I instantly felt regret and knew in my heart that this attenuator would also disappoint.
Well, I was pleasantly surprised, and here to share that this was not the case.
The Aracom is the very first attenuator I'd tested that preforms exactly as it should.
IMHO, It adds nor detracts anything from the amps tone or feel, even at every step of attenuation.
I can finally get my amps cranked up to their sweet spot then down to a usable level.
What a great tool!
I'm not 100% clear on how the "Speaker Reactance Thru" (SRT) technology works, which states:
"The PRX150-Pro allows the speaker to fully maintain its natural reactance. As a result, the PRX150-Pro allows the amplifier's original, "cranked up" tone to be maintained at reduced volume levels",
but I do find there is still a trade off (as with any attenuator
Even though the Aracom is extremal transparent, you have to realize that your speakers are still going to add breakup, warmth, girth, more harmonics content etc. to the overall tone when pushed.
Therefore the higher the attenuation, the more you loose the "pushed speaker" tone to the mix.
Even still, the Aracom is a joy to have, and Jeff was absolutely awesome to deal with.
Great communication, and delivered on time.
