Does active pickups help with clarity for tight metal chugga type stuff? or is it really pickup dependant?

I personally like the attack of actives. They are usually higher output which helps with compression too. But to be honest, the first and foremost thing for clarity and tightness in chugga stuff is technique. Your picking hand is the most important part of tight chugga. From attack, pivot and pick angle, to palm muting. Get that down to a science and you can be perfectly fine with passive pickups too.

Yes most def I agree, technique is a must. I am on the lookout for a new guitar soon probably, with focus for hard rock and metal stuff, which is why I ask. I have always had passive guitars

Check my clips in my sig...every one done with a passive pickup. Right hand technique is numero uno.

its a lot of things combined:
cab/speakers
amp
guitar/wood/pickups
technique

Yes.

Good Technique + good active pups = big boom

Check the sig for lots of active pickup metal action :D

I have the Livewire Hmet, they are highly recommended....

I could never ever get along with active pickups. I tried and tried.
I always liked the sound of them when others used them but to me, they definitely robbed my guitars of dynamics.

I found them to compress the signal so much that the small nuances that made up my playing were not accurately represented. I've never had that problem with passives.
Just not a fan.

Took my words out of my mouth, had the exact same experience.

Now i`m an Anderson fanatic, all my guitars have them. From the H-1 to the HN-3+ and all in between. They all rip.

I would say that a amp designed for delivering a tight tone is a must....and of course speakers.

Then you could test different pickups!

You can get equally as tight chugs with passives.

I switched ad went back because actives are bland and don't have many options out there.

I have used EMG's since 1985 ish and they've done me proud. I have never used boost pedals so the EMG's help in that department but like others have said it's nearly all about technique. Amps, pickups and even picks are just icing on the the cake. You need a good cake base to start with :-)

If you turn the volume down on the guitar a little the dynamics will come out...Not as much as passives but for heavy music you want the compressed sound. That was the whole Idea behind them...

I never liked EMG, I have never tried EMG x but Duncan makes some great actives. The only way for YOU to know is to get a set then compare it to a guitar with some really hot passives. BKP Painkiller, Motorcity Nuke, Dimarzio, ect..
