Does active pickups help with clarity for tight metal chugga type stuff? or is it really pickup dependant?

But to be honest, the first and foremost thing for clarity and tightness in chugga stuff is technique. Your picking hand is the most important part of tight chugga. From attack, pivot and pick angle, to palm muting. Get that down to a science and you can be perfectly fine with passive pickups too.

I always liked the sound of them when others used them but to me, they definitely robbed my guitars of dynamics.
I found them to compress the signal so much that the small nuances that made up my playing were not accurately represented. I've never had that problem with passives.
Just not a fan.
