Are Celeston V30s the worst sounding speakers ever created?

A friend brought over two of his V30s last night. They are about 5 years old and well broken in. These are british made.

I compared them to my WGS Vet30s and the difference was huge. The V30s were brittle, thin, harsh, ice pick to the head.
I used a 20th Anniversary Shiva and VHT ST/50 to compare.

In the end...he just ordered a few WGS Vet 30s to replace the V30s and I will report back. Once they are broken in...he is going to bring two 212s to a gig since they do 3 sets. We'll get to swap cabs between sets. He has a Bogner 212 and I have the same so i will bring my Bogner 212 and compare.

Is the V30 more hype than anything, or what is going on here that i just don't get. LOL! :)

I mean, I know plenty of guys use them.

IMO, the V30 is best suited for an amp that has a slightly scooped midrange. The V30s help to bring the mids back into balance. V30s with an already midrange heavy amp can sound harsh. Once again, this observation is just from the cabs and amps that I have owned. YMMV.

I truly dislike V30's in almost every possible way....but i'll be damned if they don't record pretty well. Go figure.

No, I've heard them sound great in the room with the right cab, I've also heard them sound bad. The Mesa variety probably sound better.

There is plenty of V30 hype. 50% good and 50% bad. Some people choose speakers with their ears(wallets play a factor too   ) and the others decide which bandwagon they want to be on. The fact that you didn't like them (you did try adjusting the settings on your amp right?) just means that YOU didn't like them with the amps that you played them with. Now someone else might read your opinion on them and decide that's what they think too without playing them with their gear. Just like others decide that's the speaker they want because they read something good. There is plenty of hype on speakers for sure(not just on V30s).

I have an older Uber cab that has a mix of the V30 and G12T75 and its one of the best combos I have ever played or heard. I dont like them alone but they sound incredible mixed.

I have had so many cabs and speakers in my studio. V30s win almost every shootout at the beginning of a record as to what speakers we are going to use on the record. They jump in a way that really works a lot if the time.

Two things to consider with V30's:

- They work well, depending on the amp being used and it's voicing.
- Playing them alone at home versus on stage or in a live jam are two entirely different things.

I like them mixxed with 80w celestions. Alone is another story.

I to mix them.

I love my V30's in my ported 2x12 cab and my JCM800.
They sound great.

Some amps just dont "jive" well with them others can only sound great with them YMMV.

I think the reason some people don't like V30's is because their playing by themselves, and can see the mid spike a lot people refer to as being a little harsh, in a band mix V30's sound great though.

Yeah, what sounds great in your bedroom could easily get swallowed up in a band situation. Midrange is your best friend live.

I think V30's are great, with the right amp and the right cab. I don't think you can make a general statement that V30's suck.

The statement is the worst thing ever created!!
I love V-30's! There isn't a perfect speaker that I've heard, I think a lot of speakers go with different amps better then others
