Are Celeston V30s the worst sounding speakers ever created?

V30s are hands down my favorite speaker!!!

Unless I'm pairing it with a VHT or a Framus Cobra....those are one of the few amps that just didn't dig the V30s.

V30s in my 20th ann. Bogner cab with my 20th or Uber Rev Blue sound F'n AWESOME!

Marshall cab has G12T75 CL80 x pattern, Great for my JMP100.

Mesa M90 Black Shadow sound great with my Mesa Mk III Combo.

So I dont agree. They are one of the most popular speakers

You just need the right amp/cab combination, some amps are designed around V30 voicing and other amps around other speakers.
:D

In all my Mesa vids im using a 2x12 V30 loaded cab. I dont think they sound brittle or ice-picky at all. In fact most other speakers i play thru next to V30's sound harsh to me

Don't fuck with the V30's........ :gethim:

Jim should have his Scumback Z30 out for NAMM 2011 :D

I love V30s but they definitely have their applications. I have 2 Mesa variety V30s in an "x" pattern with EVM12Ls. VERY NICE

you're own taste, the rest of your rig, and the cab they are mounted in have alot to do with you're tone.
I don't mind V30's but i much prefer the P50E's in my Fryette cab than just about anything.
Generally, I prefer V30's to C90s, CL80's, G12T-75's and G12K100's.
Only gripe with them really is the way they handle lows and that the highs can sound a bit brittle. They do mic up and cut through extremely well to their merit.

I used to really like them, but had to really be dialed in just right to make them acceptable.

I liked the Vet30s but I like the Retro 30s even more. They bring back some of the highs the Vet30s take away, they have even less of that mid spike, and have much tighter lows.

wow great info. my findings were exactly like this - thanks for that

i generally like them. i dont own any, but eventually i have plans to load my 5150 cabinets with something simillar to them (eminence, vet 30's, or just settle for V30's)

I do prefer them over G12T-85's, G12T-75's and G12K100's.

BTW - I liked the Century Vintage version better than the Vintage 30s. A tad tighter with less of the spike while making my 4x12 cab only 60 pounds.

I would recommend the retro 30s since they are less than half the price. If you gig a lot the Century Neo Vintage speakers are only 3 pounds each and may be worth saving your back.

Having said that I'll probably be selling my quad Retro 30s next week.

nice, only problem is that i need to get rid of eight sheffield 1200's before i can buy anymore speakers

I recently got away from anything to do with V30s after having them in an Xpattern with a bunch of different speakers. Now that I've been away for a while, I just played through my buddy's 4X12 with H30/V30 mix, and it's the best damn cab of them all! Especially in a band environment, they throw so nice. Go figure!

I recently did a Benefit thing with a group to raise funds for a family that has gone thru VERY rough times. I took two 4X12 cabs- a Bogner loaded with English G12H'S and a Bogner loaded with English V30's - Both cabs broken in nicely...

All the tunes were LOUD HARD ROCK and I had the luxury of cranking the amp (Bogner 100B) wayyyy up. I used a wireless and walked all over the arena and The V30 cab "fit into" the mix perfectly... Bang on - Clarity - no mush - stayed TIGHT at very HIGH volume - way better than the G12H cab for this application. (G12H cab is my fav cab) hehehehe

So... Take each situation on it's own.

It's funny. I've always found the v30 a scooped sounding speaker with a pronounced bass which is why I think they became so popular in the 90's. Helped make midrange amps of the time like jcm900's etc. Sound a lot fatter than through a 75 cab. Personally I think they hurt an amp's ability to cut in a mix. It would be my last choice for a modern heavy amp if I wanted cut. If I want clarity and cut Classic 80. Everything else greenbacks.

no, the G12m70's are ;)
I like the V30's, they do record well. They are not my fav, but I like them. Some of the coolest tones I've heard were done with V30's

+1 Can't stand Celestion G12M70's
For me V30's are good speakers, they have have to be mixed with the right cab and right amp. For example, I don't like V30's with a Vox AC30 in an opened back cab. V30's in general are not a great speaker in an opened back cab in my experience....

So you say some NEW speakers sound worse than your old ones that you have owned for some time, learned how they work and tweaked your amp to make them click together?

Hardly surprising. Nine out of ten times you are going to prefer your old ones just because you are accustomed to them, even if there is a substantial quality difference.

Great point. I have run into this a number of times, when I changed out speakers it took me a while to adjust to the new speakers, for good or bad, I was so used to hearing the old speakers.

For example, I just put in a Scumback Scumico and H75 into my Vox cab, replacing 2 Celestion Anni G12h30's, yet I miss the highs I got from the G12H30's, even though the highs on the G12H30's were often a bit harsh. As I am dialing in the Vox amp more, I am liking the scumbacks better and better....

I think V30s sound good for rock /hard rock / metal. The key is to have them well broken in. I always blend them with G12H30s .... both are 100dB SPL and compliment each other very well.

As long as they dont have a Marshall label, they are good. Not all V30's are created equal.

What specifically is wrong with V-30's that say Marshall on the back of them?
