Are my speakers damaged? (pics inside)

Hey guys, I recently bought (3 months old) an EVH 4x12 cabinet with the G12 EVH speakers. I decided to try the Jay Mitchell speaker directivity modifier and pulled out the speakers to do the mod. While examining the speakers, I noticed that two of them had minor "creases" on the cone. I am just wondering if based on the pics, do you think my speakers appear to be damaged or is this insignificant? I can't say I hear anything strange when I play...but if they have been this way since purchase I wouldn't know what I'm missing. Thanks for any input!

By the looks of it, you should be OK. As long as there are no perforations or holes, but you would have already noticed that when you saw the crease.

If Im not mistaken(coming from my days as an mecp certified auto installer….yup, glad that phase passed lol) creases in the speakers, especially where the surround meets the basket can cause the speaker to vibrate uneven. It looks like the crease goes over the "ridges" in the cone. Those ridges are there to add stability and rigidness to the cone. More damage "could" occur if you juice those speakers continually at loud volume. You could always call celestion and ask their customer service though

Looks like someone placed them face down hard on a screwdriver. I'm no expert, but it looks like that may affect how the speaker vibrates a bit.

Is the frame bent or uneven at all around the location of the damage? If your speaker frame is bent, the speaker will eventually be useless because it won't have even support around the cone.

Thanks for the input guys! I emailed Celestion with the pics and I will post an update once they get back to me. I don't recall the frame being bent but since they are in the cab at the moment, I will have to check next time I'm back in there.

From Celestion:

Hi Mitch

I’m afraid they are damaged but not the sort of damage you get though playing but either direct from the factory or more likely when fitting into the cabinet. Unlikely to have any significant impact on the sound but may encourage different modes. Try listening to one of the undamaged cones and a damaged one and hear any differences. If you still have warranty I would try to return them but otherwise I doubt if it is effecting your sound enough to worry about replacing them.

Regards

Doc

What bums me out is that EVH most likely damaged them during installation and decided the damage was minimal enough to overlook. Easy for them to decide but hard for me to swallow when the price tag is $1K. I'm not that picky of a guy but I have also never spent this much on speakers before. I will be following up with EVH to see what they think. Again I will post results, thanks again for the help.
