Are you more likely to keep an amp if it didn't cost much?

it doesn't matter to me the price, as long as it's unique and does something cool for studio / live it stays with me.... Right now im doing my bands new production and having a bunch of amps for reamping is so vital for color...

If it isn't worth much I would be more likely to keep it.

I'm much more picky and quick to flip an amp that costs $3-$4K as long as I don't have to take a huge hit on it. I also try to work with it more and make it work for me when I've dropped that much cash but if that doesn't work, it's gone. I'm finding out lately that I'm really getting the best tones out of amps that no one talks about on here. I'm usually just disappointed when I chase the latest/greatest thing.

to me as price goes up so do the expectations, i wont hold the same requirements and expectations for an introductory amplifier as one that is priced through the fucking moon.

so if i can find a reason not to like a $4,000 amplifier, you had better bet ill be unloading it. that is too much money for me not to like it. people say "its impossible to have perfection in amplifiers, settle for less"

and normally i do. that is why i have a modified 5150, and i dont own a $5,000 amplifier.

or better yet, i build my own gear from scratch.

guitars are the same way - logrithmically the expectations and requirements go up with price.

TBH really this applies to anything i own.

now if im upside down on the gear i wont unload it because i will get more use and value out of it just keeping it. i have this problem right now with a few trades because ibanez steve vai guitars are dead pieces of shit and i found this out the hard way - the only high priced guitar in their line that is still assembly line made. pretty depressing for a guitar that retails $2,400 new.

Absolutely. With expensive gear, after the newness wears off I can't stop thinking about the money factor. I pretty much see a big dollar sign sitting on top of my cab.

I've bought many $4-$5000.00 amps but...the ones I use never seem to top out at much more than $1k....Yeah cuz.....I can usually get what I want and need out of the cheaper amps ...My whole rig I gig with is worth maybe $1,500.00 or so...

without a doubt, an amp i cant get much for will stay hanging around.... if i liked it in the first place.

but too be honest, i have not spent more than 1400 so far for a head. so it's not like i have had the pleasure of owning a herbert/forza/meathead or anything even coming close to (what i would call) a high dollar amp.

i let a couple of good ones get away, like a framus cobra and a dragon both left me for less than a grand each. only had a grand in each of them, but looking back i wish i had kept them. if you need a grand, it's a little harder to sell a couple of cheap ones than it is to throw something like that on craigslist and watch you phone blow up.

yes.

The main reason I sold my Cameron was because I realized with that money, I could buy: an electric drum kit, a keyboard, and a guitar.

All of which I did :D

I guess it goes both ways... Sometimes yes, sometimes no. I've had inexpensive gear that I've dumped as it didn't do the trick. I've got some other inexpensive gear that's awesome, and it's stuck around... Case in point, I've had a Peavey Classic 30 now for about 15 or 18 years...not sure, doesn't matter. Thing ALWAYS sounded amazing for the cleans to overdriven cleans, the dirt channel sucked though. ANYWAY, since then I've installed a Celestion Gold Alnico, decent glass and some changes to the circuit and components...this little "cheap" tube amp has got some of the sweetest clean tones I've ever heard from any amp!!! Turn it up till it starts to break up?? The Alnico Gold is pure buttah!! Stick a Mk.4:23 in front of it?? I don't care who you are, it's some of the finest boutique amp tone I've ever heard, both Lester and single coil love... It's my go-to clean amp.

So it goes...

Peace,
V.

I use to hang on to a bunch of heads and then one day thought I would rather have 4 good heads that I play on a regular basis then to keep 8 or so mediocre ones. That is where I am at now....anyway.
That could change at anytime. :D

I like owning only 2 heads at a time. I find myself getting up to 4 or so and then selling them off. It isn't the cost as much as it is the actual number of amps I have. :dunno:

Psychodave, don't you have 6 Marshall cabs? I've seen your wall of cabs before in one of your vids I thought..

Price is not much of a factor for me when it comes to gear ..... the only thing that matters to me is the sound. Most of the amps I like sell very cheap used ....I have played on Trainwrecks and Dumbles ..... I can think of several used $1000 dollar amps I like a lot better.

Sure. I have a used Carvin MTS3200 head that I bought like 4-5 years ago for just over $300 that I never particularly loved and only play occassionally. I've just now got an inch to want to sell it though, because I'm just tired of it taking up space. Now, if I had an amp with $2,500-$4,500 tied up in it and wasn't getting any regular steady use, then yeah....I'd feel obligated to sell it. If I didn't look upon it as my "main" amp. I bought a new Mesa Mark V a couple of years ago for $2K and have never looked back. I consider it my main amp, and would not sell it, even if I "needed" the money. I'd have to be on the brink of becoming homeless before I'd make such a sacrifice. I also have a Peavey JSX combo as a backup that I only bought mainly due to the amazing price ($799 new) that it became available for. Actually like it quite well as a secondary amp, and being for how little I paid for it new....there is no guilt factor for me whatsoever.

Sure.

I have a couple of line 6's around that are worth WAY more to me than what I could get for them. I'd rather give them to a kid, or charity.

Hell, I have an N4 laying around that I almost never play, but at what they seem to be going for, it's not worth selling. Why bother?

It depends.

It's a lot easier to take a 50% depreciation on a $1000 amp than it is on a $3000 amp, so selling a cheaper amp doesn't hurt quite so bad.

That said, once you factor in the cost of shipping and packaging sometimes selling a cheaper amp doesn't seem worth the effort.

$550 is still a lot for me lol. Only one amp at a time here. I'd like to get a low watt tube combo for noodling in the bedroom and can crank it at small club shows. Would beat lugging my 4x12 up stairs and stuff for a small stage.

I am more likely to keep the amps that arent worth big bucks, For example, I have a 69 bassman and a 79 2204 that I was gonna put up for sale but with the price dropping daily for gear I just figure for the chump change I would get I might as well keep em, at least till later or towards trade or to use for future mod canidates.

I've kept almost every amp I've ever bought, except for a Fender combo and my old bass rig which I miss dearly:(
