Are you more likely to keep an amp if it didn't cost much?

Yes.

For some reason if I have alot of money tied up into an amp I want to make it liquid at some point.

I tend to mull over what the value of the amp is, rather than the cost. What does it give me for what it cost? So right now I have a Peavey Ultra and Fender vibrochamp. Both around $350, and both just great at what they do.

When I got back to playing in 2006 I bought a Line 6 Spider III and hated it in a few short months. My next amp was a Mesa Boogie Roadster head and recto 4x12 cab with V30's. Then I figured out I like Marshall/Vox/British/EL34/84 gain and I discovered it in a $200 Crate GT500H I bought at Music-Go-Round.

I lost my ass on the sale off my Boogie but I played the GT500H for two years at 50+ shows and got compliments all the time. Keep in mind I have an Egnater Renegade on order because I have been drooling over that amp since it's release.

It is at times too tempting to sell an expensive amp knowing you can buy 2-3 cheaper amps with hopefully near equal tone. It's all about the thrill of the hunt/chase for me. I love it!

I use to hang on to a bunch of heads and then one day thought I would rather have 4 good heads that I play on a regular basis then to keep 8 or so mediocre ones. That is where I am at now....anyway.
That could change at anytime. :D

Same here. Sitting in six high gainers right now ( not counting the disassembled 5150 on my bench) but gonna sell a few and just keep the kick ass ones. Second time around for me. I sold a bunch of amps to fund my first diezel, win/win.

I just like to have. So do you Dave   Ten cabs!! My Wife says my hobby is cheaper than cars and definitely cheaper than drugs. Doesn't matter for a while if something gets neglected. After a while and I want a change, then I'll sell. If I needed money, I will sell also.
I like gear. I do keep it practical though. I go on binges. Right now, it's tubes and pedals. Next will probably be another guitar, but I will sell one I have to fund it. My problem is when I sell something to buy something new, what I buy costs a good bit more than what I sell, so up goes my credit balance. Next thing I know, I'm like how the hell do I owe 5K
Where did that come from. Couldn't have been me.So I go yell at my Wife for her impulsive spending

i guess it depends on circumstance........i had a marshall tsl 60 that i sold cause it just didn't do it for me. not a bad amp, but not what i needed. i also have a peavey valveking that recently died on me. the vk was better than the marshall for me, but still not what i needed. i've done alot of research and played alot of amps, now i'm on the prowl for a Diezel Herbert. for me, it's worth the price to get the sound i want. at this point feels like a waste of money to get something less than what i need. if the vk hadn't died, i'd still be playing it, and i'd hold onto it as long as it lasted. still might get it fixed for a cute little tube combo. seems like the first thing to go when you need money is the big ticket items!

I'm more likely to keep an amp if it does what i need it to do. Doesnt matter what it cost. I have my core amps that stay, when I find a good deal on an amp I'll buy it. They usually stay awhile then get moved on....pretty much these are always cheapies.....My tastes are more vintage though...don't have any use for modern channel switching stuff.

At some point in time, I always regret selling gear, so I try and avoid it all costs. I only do it if I need or want the money more than the gear.

Psychodave, don't you have 6 Marshall cabs? I've seen your wall of cabs before in one of your vids I thought..

I actually have 10

See just when I feel guilty for getting yet another guitar (just a cheapo nylon string) I see this and feel better. My problem is definitely more with guitars than amps but I can relate. I think it's perfectly reasonable to have higher expectations for a more expensive amp. Some high dollar amps are of course only really supposed to do one thing, so I wouldn't get a germino or something and be pissed it couldn't do modern high gain but I would expect its one trick to be really good.

I really like my rig and can get all the sounds out of it I want (particularly with the right guitar/pickup/boost combination) and it's paid for so it's not going anywhere. Guitars... there are definitely a few that get played less than others but as said, it's not really a good time to sell gear unless you have to. I do have a lot of money tied up in gear overall though that sometimes makes me  but w/e :D

If I had cash issues like a lost job maybe but no price does not determine what I sell.

If I had two cheap amps that covered a big ticket amp yeah I would probably dump it.

I think if you buy a used amp, your investment is returned to you, usually that is.

So nah.

I see a lot of people selling some killer amps. A lot seem to say they need the money. So would you tend to keep an amp if it costs say $2,500 vs $4,500? For example, I have a 5150 that cost me $450 and I have a $100 in tubes in it, so my total cost is $550. I dont play it much, but I probably wont sell it since it didn't cost much.

Probably. I have an amp/cab that I'm considering selling even though I absolutely don't want to, because I want to do another album and that costs money and this rig could probably fetch everything I need to completely produce the album, including art work and duplication. If it weren't worth much I doubt I'd even be thinking about it.

What are you thinking of selling Bob ..... I like your amps. I would not mind having any of them. Lately I have been wanting a D120 to be honest...... I believe you have a D60.

Paisley Super Shiva rig. I won't need a significant amount of capital for the album for some months so I'm still trying to figure another way around it.

Up until a few months ago I had a dozen heads. I finally decided to keep what I'm using most and sell off a few. 5150 gone, two Mesa's gone, VHT on the chopping block. Am I sad and regretful? Yep, a bit, but I just can't justify having all these amps collect dust. Price hasn't been a factor although I tend to keep something if I'm going to take too much of a hit. I'll be taking a significant hit on the VHT but it's one amp I'm willing to move and still at least get a decent amount of change for.

I have had no issues selling amps or guitars that just did not work for ME.

I have had a harder time selling ones that do work for me.

I have had some good deals come my way, and I have sold some things and made money, in the past.
Like 2 Prophesy's I owned, bought it locally for like $350, tossed it on ebay the next day sold it for something like $750.
something similar to a 5150, but only after I determined it was not the sound that worked for me.

I'm kind of going through a similar situation right now, with the DSL100 I bought a few months back, whether to sell it, or keep it and have Dave F. mod it. It really doesn't hold up to the other amps I also own, and is the weakest of the bunch, but still, there's something to be said about just having a DSL around...especially, since I can't sell it for much...

well it depends on how rich i am. right now im not rich so if i spent a lot of money an an amp and didnt like it you bet im gonna try and sell it to recoup the money i spent on it. If i was loaded and money wasnt an issue and i spent a lot of money on an amp i probly wouldnt bother selling and just put it on a shelf somewhere so i can tell people that look at it how expensive it is...

Yes for sure, same thing with everything I own. Its much hard to justify having a 3k piece of gear if you don't actually like it pretty much 100%

Im more likely to keep cheap gear around, pedals, guitars, etc so YES!

to me as price goes up so do the expectations, i wont hold the same requirements and expectations for an introductory amplifier as one that is priced through the fucking moon.

so if i can find a reason not to like a $4,000 amplifier, you had better bet ill be unloading it. that is too much money for me not to like it. people say "its impossible to have perfection in amplifiers, settle for less"

and normally i do. that is why i have a modified 5150, and i dont own a $5,000 amplifier.

or better yet, i build my own gear from scratch.

guitars are the same way - logrithmically the expectations and requirements go up with price.

TBH really this applies to anything i own.

now if im upside down on the gear i wont unload it because i will get more use and value out of it just keeping it. i have this problem right now with a few trades because ibanez steve vai guitars are dead pieces of shit and i found this out the hard way - the only high priced guitar in their line that is still assembly line made. pretty depressing for a guitar that retails $2,400 new.

Pretty much this.
