I thought I saw you mention somewhere that you lived in the Berkshires. That just sounds like an expensive place to live. You could save some money if you sold and bought a nice doublewide on a few acres in an armpit someplace.
The beautiful Berkshires.
I own my home outright. So without a mortgage, the taxes although high, are manageable for me. But it has caused a bit of a housing crisis in the area though. Covid absolutely destroyed our town to be honest.
We've always been a bit of a "bedroom" community for New York City. Plenty of "weekenders" owned second homes up here and would come around to shop a few times during the summer and ski a few times during the winter. But once the lockdown happens, they all fled the city and came to their homes in the Berkshires and our infrastructure is not set up to have all of them here at once. Then when "work from home" became a thing, all of their friends decided to buy homes up here as well. They could keep their big city jobs and salaries, and just live up here in peace for cheap. Homes were routinely being bought well above asking price, and for cash, so most "locals" didn't have a chance at buying anything for themselves.
The next wave were the Air BnB's which decimated long term rentals for locals as well. That is what affected our work force because very few people that work in our town, can now afford to live in our town, or surrounding areas. And public transport is not a thing around here. Of the 50+ restaurants in town, not a single one has enough staff to stay open 7 days a week. I feel bad for any travelers at night because the nearest gas station open after 8pm is across state lines. It's just a mess. We have been passing rules and regulations over short term rentals in town and so far they have been an encouraging success though.
Anyways back to the taxes. Because of the current buying habits, the "value" of my house has more than tripled in the last 4 years. I admit that the roses I planted a couple years back look nice, but they did not TRIPLE the value of my house. So of course, the taxes went up as well. I could potentially sell and buy somewhere else, but probably not without having to change schools and change jobs, and at that point it's really not worth it.
