Are you paying higher property taxes than your neighbors?

that's about what I pay quarterly :-(
I thought I saw you mention somewhere that you lived in the Berkshires. That just sounds like an expensive place to live. You could save some money if you sold and bought a nice doublewide on a few acres in an armpit someplace.

The beautiful Berkshires.
I own my home outright. So without a mortgage, the taxes although high, are manageable for me. But it has caused a bit of a housing crisis in the area though. Covid absolutely destroyed our town to be honest.

We've always been a bit of a "bedroom" community for New York City. Plenty of "weekenders" owned second homes up here and would come around to shop a few times during the summer and ski a few times during the winter. But once the lockdown happens, they all fled the city and came to their homes in the Berkshires and our infrastructure is not set up to have all of them here at once. Then when "work from home" became a thing, all of their friends decided to buy homes up here as well. They could keep their big city jobs and salaries, and just live up here in peace for cheap. Homes were routinely being bought well above asking price, and for cash, so most "locals" didn't have a chance at buying anything for themselves.

The next wave were the Air BnB's which decimated long term rentals for locals as well. That is what affected our work force because very few people that work in our town, can now afford to live in our town, or surrounding areas. And public transport is not a thing around here. Of the 50+ restaurants in town, not a single one has enough staff to stay open 7 days a week. I feel bad for any travelers at night because the nearest gas station open after 8pm is across state lines. It's just a mess. We have been passing rules and regulations over short term rentals in town and so far they have been an encouraging success though.

Anyways back to the taxes. Because of the current buying habits, the "value" of my house has more than tripled in the last 4 years. I admit that the roses I planted a couple years back look nice, but they did not TRIPLE the value of my house. So of course, the taxes went up as well. I could potentially sell and buy somewhere else, but probably not without having to change schools and change jobs, and at that point it's really not worth it.

get a few chickens, or goats? I had a friend that did that. got a few goats and chickens, boom, agriculture!
At one point we had a horse, 2 ponies, a steer, 6 goats and 6-8 chickens. Then the kids grew up and moved away and I was doing it all myself…I divested.

talk to them? I talk to my neighbors regularly, about local gov BS. Otherwise we have nothing to talk about, except when I neglect my lawn...that's what the HOA is for. Oh wait, I don't have an HOA on purpose. My boat is parked on my front lawn, too bad, so sad.

It might be odd but no one here talks about their income or the amount of taxes they pay, just general complaints.

My yearly income exceeds $3.5 billion per year. I need not worry about taxes or bills or prices of anything. I'm in a position that makes me a demigod and I scoff at mere morals who make less than 1 billion a year.

Househould income about 50-60k depending on how many gigs I can snag. Property taxes are about $3200 per year which includes a road that was paved and about $300 goes towards that out of that money for 7 years. I think I have two years left. Three grand in taxes is easily my single largest expense for the year.

We’re about the same income-wise but being retired, if my part time business does well I have Uncle Sam wanting my body parts at tax time.

If my part time business does well I also get the tax time fun. But, you gotta pay. I pay, and then don't worry about it. I don't have a mortgage but did rent for many years. I feel very blessed about that, especially seeing what they want for rent now in areas I thought were pretty steep back then. I feel sorry for young people, who are being blocked out of the housing market financially. Really unfortunate.
