He stated that a group of people were animals, as identified by race ("Sub-Saharan"). I agree with Monkey that term has various meanings, not necessarily racial, but whenever I've heard it used in that sort of context it refers to Black Africans. Maybe @Wizard of Ozz can clarify what he meant.

Yeah personally I don't think a joke like that makes you racist but I don't think objecting to it makes one racist either, as it could be understood as implying negative traits or characteristics according to race.

the word "racist" has been overused by the left to silence those on the right, even as a dog whistle; just like bigot, misogynist, fascist, capitalist, xenophobist, etc. so much so that the effects have warn off to being meaningless.
