you would regret losing the diezel...save and add the axe fx later....this is crazy talk

I like your Harmony Sound a lot.

Do you have enough money to keep both? If so, do it.

Get an AxeFx ultra and do the following:

Tweak the preamps in the axe-fx to sound like your diezels preamp. A/B for a few hours a day, and get a tone you're happy with.

Find your favorite microphone positioning, and make an impulse of it! Then you can use that through your AxeFx to record with to make things super easy.

Tweak effects to sound like the Axe.

Then, you're done!

Stick with the VH4 if you're happy with it. If you do go with the AXE -FX, VHT power amps are great.

Here's something less expensive to try... get a used G-System (under a G) and use that for most of your effects(it has loops to use outboard pedals--but, you'll probably get rid of some) and it also will serve dual duty as your switching system. Then get an Axe-Fx as a 2nd setup :D

Perfect world, no problems with your back or lugging gear thru a crime zone....

I am assuming you gig with a backup head or amp? If not, add a second amp of complimentary tone, a Boogie MKIV is a good one that is pretty cheap. Stereo of real tube amps, with the safety of a backup amp is a good option. I have ran an SLO with MKV or Rivera and like the end result. A good modern darker metal tone with the SLO gives some width, TimeFactor with dry and delayed signal on the SLO and delayed only on the Rivera gives 3 layers and is a close to CD type sound, IMO.

I vote keep the Diez for sure..... you will regret the hell out of letting go of a classic, and find a nice evil friend for it to play with. Stereo is a beautiful thing for panners and phasing/chorus. FP-777 is a perfect pedal for that sort of setup. Just listening to it gets you buzzed.

Quick and dirty, run to the truck to keep from getting robbed at 4 am in the burbs of Detroit...

AxeFx.... The clips are good. No doubt. To say the AxeFx sucks since it is not a 'real' tube amp is not right. It is 90% there?? Live, with lots of drinking, people looking at ass shaking, not you anyway... Perfect setup.

My take on bar gigs, is the band good enough to get Buffy up dancing so Biff can tap that ass and buy her drinks all night??? If not, you are fired... For that, I would not take my good stuff out of the house. AxeFx all the way....

Absolutely keep your amp and save up for the AxeFx.

I would NOT get rid of the Diezel! I'd get the Axefx to use live, so you don't have to take the Diezel out live. This would make a much less complicated, smaller, lighter setup, and your Diezel would not get beat up on the road.

I think you should keep your Diezel. I have the axe FX and it is an amazing recording tool, specially if you need to conjure up a wide variety of sounds quickly. However there is something to be said about keeping an amp such as what you have for recording and playing. Try to save up and get both if you really want the axe.

You're in LA. Head over to Tone Merchants and try one out.

For the price of the Vh4...screw that! Go with the Axe. It will sound close to a VH4 and it's a million times more versatile.

I agree and as compressed feeling as the Diezel is you won't notice much difference there either.

This thread is going extremely well...feeling the love guys thanks for the feedback for sure. I will have to go and actually play an axe-fx and see if I even really care about it. I thinking keeping the diezel feels the most right...I guess I will have to save up.

Idea that works for me - Go play it every weekend for a month straight. Give the GAS a little time to wear off. If it is really that great, at the end of a month of trips to jam on it, you will still want it. I have used this method to get myself out of GAS. Easy for me to get caught up in getting guitars. I love guitars. Been doing this with a Zion HSS super strat. I am falling out of lust with it. First play, oh man, I must have this guitar. Next week less love, and so on..... Less wasted money on 'pretty good' gear. I don't need any more 'pretty good' gear.

You've got the amp, you've got what you consider a wicked pedalboard... Why are ya getting eaten alive by GAS?!?!? It's not going to make you a better player, and I say this because I've suffered from GAS way too many times. I get the product after my exciting wait, and then it typically just blends into the landscape of what I was doing before I had it anyway... As Lemmy once sang, "you know the chase, is better than the catch...".

Just my 2 cents.

We (RT) need a loaner Axe FX Ultra. :D One week for each of us. I may decide it's the best thing since Boobs, maybe not. There is only one way to find out. That is the problem with high dollar items, I usually have to buy it and try it in my specific situation (band) before I can make a decision. Seat time is the only way to do it properly. Also, I A/B everything on the same cab for an accurate comparison............So, who is gonna be the donor?

If you can keep the Diezel VH4 and get the AXE FX. I'd do that.

If you can only get one. Sell the VH4.

My AXE FX has me contemplating selling my Herbert. Don't get me wrong I love the Herbert but with an AXE FX it doesn't get much playing time. Then when I do play the Herbert I sit there thinking I can that all these tones on the AXE FX.

Buy an AXE FX and if you don't like it sell it in 5 mins. You won't have any problem selling the AXE FX and getting most of your money back.

Then get the updated 2007-2010 model Diezel VH4

Believe me it took a little while to start dialing in some killer tones like the Herbert on the AXE FX. It helped a lot to have the Diezel right there to A/B.

I used the VH4 and the powerball amp models in stereo to get the Herbert tones.

Then I figured out to turn the Cabinet " AIR" up on the AXE FX to get the speakers pushing and moving like a real amp.

Once I did that you can't tell the difference.

You know what makes me ponder life... This thread has me reminiscing about the synth days of the late 70's, and then the digital rack mount craze in the late 80's, then the back-to-basics hit of grunge and either no effects, or dodgy, high sag pedals, then the return of more boutique like pedals late 90's to early 2000's, and here we are again, back to digital rack mount systems.

I swear, in 6 to 8 years, it'll be back to "unplugged" hits and then after that it will be the stomps...

Just my guess!!
