So today I was visiting a local shop who was running a fake sale (they said this weekend, buy one guitar at LIST, get one for a penny). cool, but they carried crap (like entry level Dean guitars and such) and all the expensive stuff was way to crazy (like a Gibson Les Paul Custom list pricing for $5500).

So i left after hunting for something and decided to go visit Tru tone down the road, and was trying out a Gretsch Jet Firebird, and they had me plug into this new Orange Black Terror amp.

WOW!@!

This thing sounded absolutely insane.

it could use an EQ, but it has this knob that sweeps the EQ from lots of mids to scooped, and fat to thin and such. I was getting very heavy tight tones out of it, and thought this thing was awesome, and this was using a Gretsch! (which is awesome too, but wouldn't think as heavy as, say, a les paul).

So now the choices come...

Lunchbox Recto? (i've already got my incredible pre-500).
Lunchbox Orange Black Terror? (this thing sounded really f-in bad ass today).
or,
Lunchbox Jet City 20/22 Modded? (played one of Friedman's masterpieces and did like it very much).

sheesh.

check this thing out...

I love this whole idea of lunchbox size amps and had the Tiny Terror for a little while. In listening to these Dark terror clips, I'm hearing classic Orange garage, stoner, doom, fuzzy type tones. I'm not hearing much rock or metal sounding type tones. It has a low tech, trashy sort of sound that is exactly what many people are looking for, but it's just too rough around the edges for me but I don't play any of the styles I listed above.

My favorite lunchbox amp is the Randall RM22 MTS series by far. It's also pretty expensive compared to others but the potential versatility of the MTS series is untouchable by any of the low watt tube amps. And I hear better classic rock, hard rock, classic metal and modern metal tones in the MTS series than I do in the Terror series. I do hear better "Orange" type tones in this dark terror though. I can see where someone would like it.

Jet City JCA22H... no competition, no question, hands down...

The best sounding lunchbox type amp I've heard so far is PsychoDave's modded JCA20h
