Yeah I "attempted" it a few months ago. Got a little better.
 
Rerecorded it since i moved over to a new pc and lost my project files. Used the Angle Severe2 with Factory TV cabs.



Not sure why but i think volume fades in and out in some spots. Might just be on my end.
 
Dare I say that sounds very close to the amp on the studio recording! And I am a modelers suck guy... gap is definitely narrowing and in a mix it is becoming impossible to tell.
 
Sounds really good, but on my studio cans (Beyer DT990 Pro) the levels still wobble a bit.

Pls read this critique as coming from a guitarist/sound-engineer (and it's with the best intentions...if I didn't care at all, I wouldn't be trying to get you closer)

I think to get closer to Zakk's tone, the chorus needs to be a bit more 'chewy' sounding...right now it has a bit stiff character to it, that gives it away that this is not the original recording. The solo could use a bit more verb in the 'ethereal' part before the drums kick in.
Also, note that the pre-chorusses (1st one starting at 1m33s) have a chugging low D chords underneath instead of long chords, but that could be an artistic choice, right? ;) :yes:

FWIW, I have played this live by the way, in a one-night-only Ozzy tribute with a really good band (well, apart from the singer...great singer, just not suited for Ozzy at all). With my 'regular' band, we do Bark at the Moon & Crazy Train, as we don't have a keyboard player. Did Mr. Crowley for a while too, but that intro needs to come off tape then...
 
Thanks. Seems like my verb is all tail. Still working on the chorus right now I'm using a pitch detune. . I used to have the chug in it but it was drowning out the slide. I suck at slide work. Lol

Do you have any Les Paul-like guitars with an medium/high output Alnico 5 bridge humbucker (ideally something from DiMarzio) OR a Super Distortion?
I found that such humbuckers can translate that thick chewyness in the lows and low-mids for Zakk's tone of that era better than pickups that sound too tight. I know that Jeffrey himself ( :lol: :LOL: I went there...) played EMG's, but F* that. I will say after a brief stint with EMG's that they remain pretty focussed sounding, when there's a lot of fx-processing going on, but then again, so do PAF Pro's....
11-56 strings help for the rhythm tone, but getting those pinch harmonics out (on the G fret) will be some work.

Amp-tone wise you're pretty damn close though...time to finetune the little things. :thumbsup:
 
Amen. I used a Kramer Assault plus with Duncan Alt8. Also have a ltd Hetfield iron cross which sounds a little dull. Pinches are difficult on either. Solo much easier to pull off on the Kramer but sounds a little better with the ltd.
 
I'm not that that familiar with the AX8, but I know from old tricks with a POD X3 that it can help tremendously to add a parametric EQ step after the amp to tweak the tone better... If your LTD sounds dull, but thick, try boosting 1.6kHz-2kHz. That will usually bring out some definition.
The mud lives in the 200-400Hz range (more or less). From 500Hz onwards comes the 'honk'.
If it gets too hairy, cutting 4kHz sometimes helps.
I hear ya on how solo's can play a lot easier on certain guitars...thing is, that Les Paul bodies with a set neck really bring a certain character to the tone, that this song can benefit from. My ESP Horizon NT-II (while a neck through 2 humbucker fixed bridge) sounds stiffer than my Les Pauls. Scale of course makes a huge impact, as does number of frets, when it comes to the neck pickup's tone. 22 frets means usually that your neck humbucker is in a better sounding spot.
 
I have a charvel that has thicker strings. I'll give it a go when I get it tuned up. Thanks for the advice.
 
Took some advice to heart. Not perfect but i think this is the closest ive come yet. Got a few missed notes on the solo. Things got me a bit frustrated and was having a hard time focusing.

Easy on the volume. solo is a bit hot. sounds fine in my DAW

I think you've put in a bit too much gain, making the rhythm tone too hairy/screamy. Does the AxeFX allow a specific compressor model to be placed in front of the amp? Using a Boss CS-2 or MXR DynaComp (model) should give that thickness, while losing some top-end bite, plus you can lower the gain of the amp a bit, and use the compressor as a sort of boost as well.
The pre-chorus chugs are indeed improved, although volume wise too loud compared to the part following it. And you may need a bit less reverb on the rhythm guitar tone as well.
Solo + tone seems indeed to be improved. :thumbsup:
 
Guitarbackingtrack.com. Found some punch in issues towards the end. Some things sounded fine in reaper but when I render it over that's when I notice. Btw my signal chain is guitar. Axe fx2 USB into laptop. 1/4 outs into presonus Eris 5 monitors
 
Ok. Time to move on to something else. I don't know if i can get any closer with my gear. Still working with the slide. Tried to get true to original and used the same amp and fx Zakk used.

Guitars are a little loud after rendering.
