Thinking of upgrading my old M Audio fast track ultra even though it works flawlessly. Well its not supported anymore and if I upgrade widows to anything past 7 I wont be able to get a driver. Those UA Apollo's look nice. I like the idea of the mic preamps working with the plugins. That's my main interest as well as the converter upgrade of course. What do you guys think? What interfaces do you use and why? Thanks.

My Fast Track Ultra works fine with Windows 8.1 ? No driver issues.

No love for the Focusrite stuff?? :dunno:

I did upgrade from a PRO24 DSP to the Twin. They are not even close.
On higher end focusrite interfaces there are preamp simulations, but they are not even close to the UAD.
I really like the Neve preamp sim and falling in love with the API. My ultimate test is to stack 10-20 tracks, drums, bass, guitars, vocals recorded with the same preamp/preamp sim. A great preamp or sim will not start to mush up or reveal strange artifacts.

All this talk of PC's & drivers  Get a Mac

Well, today a Mac is super overpriced PC. Get yourself a decent notebook from a decent manufacturer, (HP, Dell, Lenovo etc.) their drivers work and don't get no name funky peripheries. UADs drivers are good. Don't install funky $hit on your DAW box like ilok cracks and pirated stuff and spend the difference on UAD plugins.

Yeah the ID14 is like 300$ and check the 81 reviews on it for starters on Sweetwater.. I would go the ID22 route if you wanted to use an external preamp with it down the line. Something like a GAP or Warm Audio Pre. With that setup you won't be able to blame your interface for shitty sounding recordings anyway. I personally feel Apollo sucks you in for more cashola once you get your foot in the door. It does sound great but I think I prefer hardware for resale over software.

I agree and that's what I have the Audient iD14. Still have a $100 Presonus and AB'd the Audient is by far defiantly worth $300. Bedroom players and recorders should search no further.

Besides the add-on preamp simulations, amp models (which I'll never use, I own the real amps) what are the main features/benefits the UA Apollo Duo has over say a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2? What makes it worth $600 more to me? Huge difference in sound quality or what?

The converters are top notch. It's light years beyond my old Presonus without even running a preamp sim.

Felt inclined to come back here and post after a weekend with my iD14: Excellent Interface. So wish I'd've had/found this years ago. So much money would've been saved.

Love my focusrite 2i4. I do all my recording direct with a Suhr Reactive Load and Ownhammer IRs, so I don't have to worry about pristine preamps, numerous inputs, etc.

Love mine too. Nice and clear. Does what I need it to do and converters seem good and fast. As mentioned, I have mine paired with the 8 channel interface and I have all I need. Dig it. This will probably be my setup for the next ten years as let's be honest, how much do most of us bedroom guys really produce? I have been working on the same song for 8 months. There is something satisfying about real drums and real mics and cabs for me. Harder to work with and the editing of drums can be a bitch but at the end of the day it is a hobby and gives me something to tinker with.

Lots of guys are loving the Audient stuff right now. I got a Tascam UH-7000 a little over a year ago and haven't even considered anything else since. Its just awesome. Great pre's, even better converters. Its a bit limited on I/Os, but it meets my needs, so that's not an issue for me. I ended up buying a JBL Nano Patch so I can control my headphone and monitor volumes separately.
