I'm looking at making the next investment into my gear to be an audio switcher (loop switcher) or whatever you kids call em these days. Just curious what experiences you have had with them and different brands and seeing what may be recommended more highly than others. So far I've looked at the GCX Voodoo Lab products but have found it more difficult to find any other competition. in a similar price range.

Rocktron Patchmate (I think) is in around the same price range.

RJM RG-16 or Effects Gizmo if you need more loops.

A little bit more money but better sound quality and a better buffer. Easier to use than the GCX.

Its the similar price range that becomes the problem. My first jump in the loop switching thing was a Voodoo Labs GCX. While they are good, there is better. Top of the line would be a Custom Audio Electronics switcher from Bob Bradshaw. The isolation transformers are totally quiet and there is no hum or bleed over from one loop to the other. Whereas on the GCX I found a little white noise from some of the pedals to the loops and using it as an A/B/Y was a little painful. With the 4x4 you can run 2 sends to 2 amps without having to muck about with a y-cable like on a GCX and ground lift. Bob builds all his products custom order, or you can find some on ebay from time to time. But, be prepared to pay up about 2 or 3 times what you would pay from a mass production outfit such as Rocktron or Voodoo.

Bob is building me a custom switcher/patch bay right now. It was about $1000 which included 6 loops, 3 amp sends (mono-mono-stereo) and 1/4" & midi ins/thru's, isolated tuner out and all that business. It is good stuff though and will last a life time coming from Bob. I also have a 4x4, line mixer and 2-Midi pedals from him.
