Dood... I usually try to catch ACL when I'm home on Sat night and I did catch that last night. When they first came on, I was like "hmmm... a tromone guy... not my cup of tea". But geez... they were funkier than hell and I was digging it BIG time. I was walking by the TV when it came on and just stood there for like three tunes watching, not even bothering to sit down. I thought it was cool that he had a couple of skinny white doods in the band too. The drummer was on-it! The guitar player at first left me thinkin he wasn't doing jack. But I keep watching him and started to notice all the funky little different things he was doing back there and was really digging it. Glad I wasn't the only one!
Exactly same story here; except I was really digging the previous band as they were equally cool. I almost turned the TV off and I thought "what the heck", i'll watch for a few more minutes. Like you, thought it started out a little "meh" and then I was pulled in by the rock/funk. Thought the guitarist's tones were really cool and as little as he played, it really added a lot to the compositions. Loved that fuzz sound he had going. DVR'd it to show my family, but they watched for about 20 seconds and went about their day
LOL... sounds like we pretty much had the same experience. I caught the last few of that first doods tunes as well. Definitely caught my attention -- reminded me sort of like a hispanic Lou Reed. Different enough to catch my ear. I was also watching the lead player in the first band, as I dug his Les Paul. Playing was pretty pedestrian. That young kid playing lead for Trombone Shorty was definitely a "sleeper". Glad I stuck around long enough to really get (and dig) what he was doing. Great tone, great taste. I tend to over-play the hell out of everything (wanna-be Paisley if I'm playing country, wanna-be Gary Moore if I'm playing rock/blues, wanna-be Yngwie if I'm playing metal). So I'm always impressed with guys like that who can just hang-back and lay it down, but do it so softly at times.
Nuther dood who impressed me on ACL this year was Tim Reynolds with DMB. I tuned in both times they played that episode and was REALLY digging what Tim was doing. I've seen him play with Dave before and never was really that bowled-over -- but that ACL performance was very funky and enjoyable. Actually, the Trombone Shorty thing reminded me of DMB at times in terms of intense, funky rock stuff. I'm a shredder, but I LOVE that kind of thing and would love nothing more than to be in a funky band like that, where I got to just shred/blow over it all, ala a sax player. I could die happy after being able to do that for a while. My town has a couple of great, funky dance bands and it always bugged me that they've had mediocre guitar players -- cause that stuff lends itself to just going-crazy as the songs climax. Really dug how Shorty's band did that. Very intense!
